| OHCC LIVING | DECEMBER 2021 | 7 My Final Article! That's right – the OHCC Living articles are written by the SERT Club President and beginning January 1st that honor will belong to Tom Porter, the 2022 SERT Club President. I will assume the role of Vice President, Jill Lemons will remain as Secretary, and Gary Baur will remain as Treasurer. There are also three vacant Director positions, so get involved! Allow me to wrap up the year and my tenure with the following updates: Wildfire Evacuation Plan – As I previously mentioned, this is an Ocean Hills Neighborhoods Plan sponsored by the Oceanside Fire Department. The study has been completed and a template plan developed. The Fire Department has recommended that all entities within the Ocean Hills geographic area (including our community) consider developing such a Plan. The Fire Department makes it clear that no threat is imminent, and its recommendation is only to consider developing a plan. Wendy from the HOA representing the OHCC corporation along with myself representing the community residents is also a member of the stakeholder group who received the evacuation study and plan template and I'm confident she has been keeping our Board of Directors informed of its progress along with the Fire Departments recommendation. It's now up to the Board to decide whether or not to develop an Evacuation Plan. In any case, I recommend the Board post the study and plan template on the OHCC website for our review. Residential Knox Boxes – You've read articles written by both CPS and SERT about Knox Boxes – those boxes that can be affixed to a door or a building near a door that contain the keys to your home that can be accessed by fire departments to gain entry into the home in case of an emergency. SERT is currently coordinating with both of our responding emergency response agencies (Oceanside and Vista Fire Departments) and the Knox Box Company to develop a lock and key system that will work with keys from both Fire Department's, (and possibly CPS to perform welfare checks). Those residents who choose to participate must purchase and install a residential Knox Box. As you can imagine – there are a lot of moving parts that must be finalized before the program can be implemented, but I wanted to give you an update so that you can decide if you'd like to be a participant. More to come… Sert Club Fundraising – As a reminder – the SERT Club receives no financial support from the Board of Directors and thus all funds for community emergency preparedness and response efforts must come from us – residents of the OHCC community. The SERT Club began a fundraising campaign in August with the goal of raising $16,320 – that's $10 per household. Your generous donations to date (ranging from $10 to $1,000) have raised $3,745. The SERT Club has prepared a very detailed budget to explain how and where the funds will be spent (as all funds are redistributed back into the community), but to summarize, the majority of the funds raised will allow the SERT Emergency Response Team to purchase a mobile trailer, equipment, and supplies necessary to respond to a localized incident or disaster within the community. For those who have contributed – thank you; for those of you still considering, please let me know if you have any questions. Do Dues Day – The 2022 Do Dues Day is Sat., Jan. 8 and the SERT CLUB would be honored if you would consider renewing your existing membership – or joining new. The annual dues are $10 per member, or for the first time the SERT Club is offering a lifetime membership for only $200. With each membership, you will be offered a no-cost household survey where a qualified SERT Club representative will discuss how to safely shut off utilities, use a household fire extinguisher, the preferred location for the HELP/OK signs, emergency preparedness tips, and other important issues. See you at Do Dues Day! Help Wanted – As usual, I want to extend an offer to all community residents to become a SERT Club member and get involved! There are openings on the Emergency Response Team, the Neighbor Helping Neighbor program, the Education, Training, and Development committee, and so many more. For additional information, please stop by the Do Dues Day table. By President John Slayton, SERT President
