CLUB NEWS | THE COLONY NEWS | JANUARY 2022 | 35 By Kathy Lewis, 412-0006 Happy New Year! The pickleball community had an incredible 2021, and we're ready to have more fun in 2022. We are in the process of forming The Colony Pickleball Club. Previously, Pickleball was part of the existing Racquet Club (tennis and paddle tennis), but with the growth of pickleball, we feel it is in the best interest of the pickleball players to form a separate club. The application was submitted to the HOA Board for approval, and I have been assured it will be approved at the Board's January meeting. Any resident interested in joining the Pickleball Club may contact me for more information. The year ended on a high note as 28 players battled for high honors on Dec. 4. Of those 28 friendly competitors, seven players had never participated in a tournament at The Colony. Nine of the competitors had begun playing pickleball only within the last six months. The women's division crowned two winners: Karen Nichols, who is relatively new to pickleball, and Wanda Skinner, who has many competitions under her belt, but joined The Colony's tournament for the first time. Scott Ross was victorious in the men's division, having competed and won in the past. Congratulations to all the players for an exciting and fun morning on the courts! As you set your goals for 2022, why not top your list with learning pickleball? It's an easy sport to learn and you will meet other energetic, fun-loving Colonists. I would love to introduce you to the sport and teach you the basics of the game at no charge. I am available to meet with you any morning, afternoon or evening. Yes, it's that addictive! Paddles and balls are available for you to use, so why not call me and set up a time that is convenient for you. Come and join the fastest growing sport in America! See you on the courts! Pickleball Karen Nichols, Women's Pickleball Co-winner Wanda Skinner, Women's Pickleball Co-winner Scott Ross, Men's Pickleball Winner Our first bocce meet was on Dec. 2. Ten people showed up to play and socialize, and a good time was had by all. After the holidays, we most likely will have more people come out to play and enjoy the camaraderie with old and new friends. We play every Thursday from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. No need to RSVP – come out to play or just enjoy watching. Water is always provided, but you may bring snacks and/or any beverage of your choice. Remember to bring a sweater or jacket, as it does cool down in the late afternoon. Bocce By Jeanne Bender, 949-295-5412
