36 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JANUARY 2022 | Happy New Year! I wish each of you a happy and healthy 2022. I hope those of you who have been thinking of attending one of our meetings, will start the new year off and see what we have to offer. You can check out our booth at Activities Day on Jan. 15 from 1 to 4 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. We are here to help! Our next meeting and support group will be on Thurs., Jan. 20 at 10 am in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room. There is no guest speaker this month. This will give each of you time to share, if you choose to and also learn. Don't forget about our program in the Arts and Craft Room. We entertain your loved one while you are at the meeting. We offer entertainment, games and fun. Drop them off and go on to the meeting. Last month we were so fortunate to have our loved ones entertained by Tin Man's Heart. Thank you so much Lee and Michael Stone for being so generous with your time and talent. If you have any questions, would like to learn more about our group or Memory Loss, call Diane, (951) 769- 0130, Doug, (360) 840-5559 or Anne, (951) 845-8700. Here is the second of the eight types of Dementia. 2. VASCULAR DEMENTIA: Vascular dementia is considered the second most common type of dementia, accounting for about 15 to 20 percent of cases in North America and Europe (the numbers are slightly higher in Asia). Vascular dementia occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked off, depriving the neurons of oxygen and damaging or eventually killing off those cells. This often occurs after a major stroke or a series of small strokes (known as transient ischemic attacks, or TIAs), or it can be due to a brain hemorrhage or the narrowing of blood vessels due to high blood pressure, diabetes, or atherosclerosis (when arteries get clogged with fat, cholesterol, and other substances). People over the age of 65 are most commonly affected, and risk increases with age. It is common to have a mix of Alzheimer's and vascular dementia. Next month we'll discuss Lewy Body Dementia.
