| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | FEBRUARY 2022 | 13 Golf Advisory Golf at Sun Lakes is now in the middle of winter season. This comes with the familiar frost delays and speedy greens. Hopefully everyone saw the article repost in last month's Lifestyles by Brian Garlington discussing the importance of respecting frost delays to avoid serious damage to the turf, especially on the greens. Cutting the greens this time of year is done to even and smooth bumps. The greens are not being cut any shorter and the speed is caused by slow growth due to cool temperatures. One benefit of the slow growth this time of year is the opportunity to perform equipment maintenance after a very busy year. So while the course activity of the maintenance crew is reduced this time of year, they are very busy getting the equipment in shape for spring. Winter also brings much-needed rain to the region. Often the courses will be closed, or open for walking only or cart path only. It's important to follow these restrictions since damage to soft turf takes much more time and expense to repair. Once the courses are reopened, it is important to follow the 90-degree rule and use entry/ exit gates that direct traffic away from areas that still may be soft. With the recent improvements in drainage, the flow of excess water clears the underground drains, allowing the turf to dry and minimizing the length of closures. At times during heavy rains, the irrigation system is used to lower the water level in the lakes. This keeps the water levels in the lake from overflowing and compromising the integrity of the liner, avoiding costly repairs. Sun Lakes Committee Reports Safety Advisory During the months of October and November, the Patrol noticed a decrease in Parking Violations as there had been a concentration of effort on the constant repeat offenders. Hopefully, more residents will make an improved effort to follow overnight pass rules and regulations. There are continued speeding violations. Drivers are being observed and violators are followed and stopped when possible. Again we all need to slow down. ~ Bill Bess, (951) 769-8022 Recreation Advisory I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. We did get to offer the NYE celebration in a limited manner, so that was a real positive. Our new menu is attracting residents to our restaurant. The RAC has many activities planned for our community in the new year. We hope you will all come out and enjoy our offerings. Entertainment is high on the list. I would like to welcome our new RAC volunteers as new volunteers bring new ideas. If you would enjoy serving on our committee, there are applications at the receptionist desk. Sept. 1 is a good time to submit an application. You can submit it earlier also. Just give it to Kara, our Recreation Director. October is the month that we look at all submissions and schedule interviews to meet you and learn about your interests. If you enjoy being involved in our Sun Lakes activities for the residents, you are just the person we are looking for. No experience required. The RAC is made up of 11 volunteers and each year there are openings, sometimes as many as six. We serve two-year terms and the time seems to go by quickly. Come talk to us and see if we are just what you are looking for to be involved in the community. ~ Patricia Elevi, Chair, RAC, (951) 850-3900
