40 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | FEBRUARY 2022 The AACC ended 2021 with a blast! Our Christmas party was a huge success; and everyone said they had a great time. Thank you to all that came. We hope that you are having a happy new year! Profuse thanks go to our outgoing executive committee, under the leadership of Regina Thomas, for all the hard work they put in during the past two years. We know it was extremely challenging! Congratulations to the 2022-2024 executive committee, with Wanda Valentine as president. We look forward to an exciting, rewarding, and edifying two years under her leadership… stay tuned! February is a month of many celebrations: American Heart Month, Library Lovers' Month, Youth Leadership Month, and National Black History Month to name a few. It's the latter celebration that is the focus of this and next month's Breeze articles. In 1926, Harvard educated historian Carter G. Woodson declared the second week of February as Negro History Week. He developed the idea in Illinois after attending a 50th anniversary celebration of the 13th Amendment (abolition of slavery). The festivities included exhibits depicting events in African-American culture and lasted for three weeks. The idea of celebrating African-American history prompted Mr. Woodson to establish the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History (ASALH) to encourage the study of the accomplishments of Black Americans. He chose the second week of February for Negro History Week because it included the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Both of these men were celebrated for their contributions to the lives of African Americans. The AACC strives to become an invaluable source of information and entertainment for Four Seasons residents. We invite everyone to our next meeting to learn more about all that is planned for this year. We are interested in hearing YOUR thoughts and ideas. Our next meeting will be on Monday, Feb. 7 at 6 pm in The Lodge Game Room. We will introduce our new executive committee and will celebrate Black History Month with quizzes, prizes, and information. If you have any questions, please contact Bettyann James at (951) 572-5538. ~ Jane Gentry African American Cultural Club Wanda Valentine, 2022-2024 AACC Board President
