28 | LIFE IN SOLERA | FEBRUARY 2022 | Famous Ham Radio Operators The other night I watched an episode of Last Man Standing where the star of the TV series was using a Ham radio. "I did not know TV stars were amateur radio operators," was my first thought. My next thought was, "What other famous person is or had been a Ham operator?" It's a given that many engineers, astronauts, and cosmonauts are/ were Ham Radio Operators – they work in technical fields, so it's not much of a surprise that they are licensed radio operators. So, did you know that following famous people were Hams? ("SK" denotes the operator is no longer alive. Bold typing indicates their license number) • Ray Dolby (SK) – American engineer, founder of Dolby Laboratories, F5VBY • Bob Moog (SK) – Inventor of the Moog Synthesizer,K2AMH • Howard Hughes (SK) – Billionaire, Filmmaker, Aviator, Aircraft designer, W5CY • Leo Fender (SK) – Designer of Musical Instruments, Mr. "Fender Electric Guitars," W6DOE • Nolan Bushnell – Founder of Atari, W7DUK • David Packard (SK) – Co-founder of Hewlett Packard, 9DRV • Jack Kilby (SK) – Invented the Microchip and hand Held Digital Calculator, W9GTY • Qaboos Bin Said Al-Said – Sultan of Oman, A41AA • King Hassan II (SK) – King of Morocco, CN8MH • Juan Carlos I of Spain, EA0JC • Keizo Obuchi – Japanese Prime Minister, JI1KIT • King Hussain of Jordan (SK) – JY1 • Carlos Saul Menem – President of Argentina, LU1SM • Emil Lahoud – President of Lebanon, OD5LE • Prince Talal of Saudi Arabia, SU1VN • Albert II – Prince of Monaco, 3A0AG • Walter Cronkite (SK) – "The world's most recognized" television newsreader, KB2GSD • Patty Loveless – Country Music Singer, KD4WUJ • James Lance Bass – NSYNC pop singer, KG4UYY • Priscilla Presley – Film star & businesswoman. Regardless, I think you will agree Ham Radio has some esteemed company! This article was brought to you by Ray C. Gayton-Jacob (N6KZM) of the "SOLERA RADIO CLUB." Club members are poised to provide communications options when critical systems become inoperable. "When All Else Fails – Think: Radio Communications." He will present Part 2 on Feb. 7. The group meets in Oakmont Room 1 and 2 from 4:30 to 5:30 pm. On March 7, following on the Marty's presentation of the overall history of the period, Richard Crowe will talk on his 1970-1971 experience in Vietnam – just one soldier's story – and his 50th anniversary return trip to Vietnam in December, 2019. ~ Richard Crowe HISTORY GROUP Same Named Relatives Confusion comes to the forefront when you have a name for a person in your tree, but you don't know which one it is. I have a distant cousin named Cleopatra, but there were at least eight famous Cleopatras (mine was Cleopatra VII). Or perhaps Pope John was a relative. There were 16 of those. As you can see, knowing which one of someone becomes important. Many of the peers in the Peerage have the same name, but are a numbered Earl, Baron, Duke, etc. You must figure out which is the one(s) in your tree by doing additional research. Another situation in this arena has to do with how ordinary families named subsequent generations whether male or female. This schema is not used so much today but was very prevalent in previous centuries. It goes like this: the first son or daughter were named after the father's father and mother's mother; the second son was named after the mother's father and the second daughter names after the father's mother; the third son was named after the father and the third daughter after the mother; the fourth son was named after the father's eldest brother and the fourth daughter after the mother's eldest sister; any children's names after that were up for grabs, as far as names of people in the family (they had big families back in those days). As you might imagine, this resulted in fathers and sons and grandfathers or mothers and daughters and grandmothers having the same names. So when you are building your tree and you get into this type of situation, do your research so you don't wind up putting the wrong person in the wrong place or going off on a branch that doesn't belong on your tree.
