start your visit to the state park. The Center is an underground facility with only the huge glass entrance doors open to the air.
Not to be missed is a 15-minute video, "A Year in the Desert." There is a beautiful desert garden with nature walks that explain the
different plants that can live in the extreme heat. There is also a pond filled with pupfish. These tiny fish (the big boys sometimes
make it to two inches long) can live in the extremes that the desert offers. Their water home can be fresh or as salty as the ocean,
and it can range in temperature to near freezing all the way to over 100 degrees! There is no other fish in the world that can
tolerate this type of temperature range.
I checked Google maps and it is a 1.5-hour drive to Anza Borrego from The Colony. You can even make a loop of your drive,
heading up Highway 79 through Aguanga and Warner Hot Springs and coming home by Lake Henshaw and Pauma Valley. I love
the desert, and I feel shocked and sad when I hear that someone has never visited this intriguing country.
