CLUB NEWS | THE COLONY NEWS | FEBRUARY 2022 | 39 Where else would anyone want to be on the first day of 2022 than on the pickleball courts? The rain stopped, the temperature was above freezing and the courts were full of sunshine. Three courts were also full of eager competitors for our first tournament of the year. Two players, Darla Gonzalez and Joey Santiago, joined us for the first time and brought lots of excitement with them. After killing it on the paddle tennis court for years, Joey brought his talents to the pickleball court and with Bruce Ray was co-winner of the Men's Division, and Kathy Lewis won the Women's Division. The next tournament will take place on Saturday, Feb. 5. Come and join us for hours of live sports entertainment! In a recent local tournament, the Coachella Valley Grand Prix, four Colony pickleball players competed in their first sanctioned tournament with outstanding results. Bruce Ray paired up with Mark Tamayo and took first place in their division. Colleen Ray and Lisa Schrader placed fourth in the women's doubles, and Lisa and Mark teamed up for mixed doubles and won third place. With almost 300 participants, we are extremely honored to play on The Colony courts with these four competitors. Congratulations to each of you! If you are a Colony resident who would like to join in the fastest growing sport in America, please contact me. I will be very happy to teach you the basics of the game at no cost. We have paddles and balls for you to use, and I am available any day to guide you through the fun sport of pickleball. I look forward to seeing you on the courts soon!
