42 | THE COLONY NEWS | FEBRUARY 2022 | CLUB NEWS After a week of rain, the weather warmed up and the skies cleared for the monthly Paddle Tennis Tournament on Jan. 7. Karen and Paul Nichols hosted the tournament breakfast with delicious nutritional sustenance for the players and spectators alike. Ellen Micheli and Karen Nichols organized four groups of evenly matched players, which led to lots of great points and even sets. Tom McClure "squeaked by" to win the Men's division by two games. Long-time paddle tennis ace Judy Brackin (who has finally recovered from injury) returned to the tournament to win the Women's division. The overwhelming opinion of all playing and watching was that we're lucky to still be on the courts at this time in our life! The next evening, the Racquet Club gathered for our monthly dinner. Rita Nastri and Daphne Iacobo hosted a wonderful dinner, catered by Pangea, a Greek restaurant in Temecula. They chose a New Year's Eve theme, complete with top hats, glitter and confetti. The meal from Pangea was great, as expected, and was enjoyed by the 60 Racquet Club members in attendance. Rita completed the evening by circulating the room with NYE riddles which kept the room in laughter. Tom congratulated Bruce Ray on his Jan. 1 Pickleball Tournament win and Jeanne Bender for captaining The Colony Ladies USTA 3.0 tennis team, which was scheduled to have their first match the following day. The Jan. 12 women's luncheon was also hosted by Rita Nastri and Daphne Iacobo. February's women's potluck luncheon will be on Wednesday, Feb. 12, in the Lounge. The sign-up list will be posted in the display cases outside the courts. Racquet sports, long-time friends, good food, wine and laughter signaled a good start to 2022! Racquet Club By Tom McClure, 303-7838 Paddle Tournament winners Judy Brackin and Tom McClure I am sorry to say we lost a member of our bowling community — Cheryl Nalley has passed away. She will be missed, and our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends. They also go out to Mel Giambastiani. John Alex was also very ill, but having recently spoken to him (Jan.7), I can report he is doing very well and seems to have recovered, although he says he is still a little weak. I am sure the loss of Cheryl will be difficult for all of us. Bowling resumed on Jan. 6 after a two-week layoff for the holidays. December put Judy Brackin and Richard DeFilippo on the injured list, and they may not be able to bowl again this year. Let's hope they can. Hot Schotzz is still in first place, and as of Dec. 16, Strikes Happen and Rolling Pins were still in close contention. Our Christmas Dinner was a lot of fun, and along with dinner (a super good ham), we all had champagne, lottery tickets and entertainment by Bob & the Bobettes! Bowling By Hank Fleischer, 714-272-3684
