36 | THE COLONY NEWS | FEBRUARY 2022 | CLUB NEWS
Please join us in the Meeting Room at 10:30am on
Wednesday, Feb. 9, as we discuss the deeply moving
Cry, the Beloved Country, Alan Paton's 1948 classic
about a black man's country under white man's law.
Considered the most famous and important novel
in South Africa's history, this is a story of two fathers,
one black, one white, and their sons, set against the
background of a land and a people driven apart
by their race and ethnic group, by their urban vs.
rural environments. With unforgettable characters
and events, Cry, the Beloved Country is tragedy
and injustice, but also love and faith, courage and
endurance, the struggle for understanding and
compassion and ultimately, forgiveness, humanity,
and hope.
