| OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2022 | 37 Swim, Surf & Wellness It's winter in southern California, but you wouldn't know it by the activity at OHCC's pool. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, Leesa Singer's aqua fitness classes are held from 9 to 10 am. On the other four days, the lane markers remain up until 11 am and lap swimmers are diligently getting in their workouts. Even on cool, rainy days, 6 to 11 am are prime time hours and a casual observer will often find swimmers sharing a lane. Most folks are happy to share, and they carefully dodge each other in the four-foot-wide space. It might be winter, but it's always 84 degrees in the pool! Swim lessons: The Swim Surf and Wellness club has members who enjoy sharing their love of swimming with others. What could be better than FREE swim lessons? Contact Ken Krueger at k2krueger@yahoo.com to learn more about our instructors and how the lessons are set up. Days, times and length of lessons can all be tailored to your needs. Did we say FREE? A Swim, Surf, & Wellness Club member who took advantage of the club's free lessons is David Hirsch. He started out a non-swimmer who now completes about 70 laps during a swim. He is also into technology. In this and future articles, David shares his favorite gadgets. First off is a waterproof music player: When I swim, my brain is thinking about my stroke, my body movement, and my kicking. I do sometimes get bored with all that thinking! I like to listen to music when I am home or in the car, so why not while swimming! So, I bought a SYRYN Swim buds Flip Bundle (on Amazon, $70) almost two years ago. I love it! I used my iTunes to download a playlist of 500 songs. It has a USB plug and cable that serves to download and that's also how you charge it. A single charge lasts eight to 10 hours. It has a clip that attaches to the back of your goggles band. It's very easy to start/pause, skip songs and control the volume. The waterproof earbuds that are included will work fine for most people. Unfortunately, my ears are a strange size, so I purchased a separate headphone with a bigger selection of earbuds (Swim Buds Sport, on Amazon $60)." Blood pressure clinic: The SSW Club offers a monthly blood pressure clinic to OHCC residents. On the last Friday of every month, from 2 to 3 pm, you'll find us on Palm Court. This is a FREE service of the club. Need us to come to you? We can do that, too. Contact Lynne Conde at lynneconde@ gmail.com for more information or to make an appointment. Interested in joining our club? Just drop off a check for $10 at the Clubhouse. Make it out to the Swim Surf and Wellness club and ask the staff person at the desk for our form. That way we'll have all of your contact info. You can also contact Sara Stewart at s.stewart1@att.net for more information. David shows how the waterproof music player attaches to his goggles. David in action! Health, wellness, exercise, breathing in fresh air continue to be at the core of all the hikes we undertake as members of the Walkers and Hikers Club. Though all in this list can be gained on one's own, we add camaraderies to the list, a number of people heading out together, some meeting for the first time. This writer and his wife can say in all honesty that we have met some most enjoyable people during our club hikes, people we would never have met under any other circumstances. Some have remained very good acquaintances over the years we have been hiking on Club hikes. Join us if you have not done so already. You will meet interesting people. Late January, we hiked Oak Oasis County Open Space Preserve in Lakeside, near the El Cajon Mountain Trailhead. The trail at Oak Oasis is a 2.6 miles loop trail, not heavily trafficked on a Friday morning. This was a trail that took us away from home, exploring new hiking territory. We will get to this area again during this year, as trailheads abound. In February, we will stay close to home to hike Mount Calavera, hike to the top to gain a panoramic view west of us, toward the ocean. This hike is scheduled for Feb. 3. On Feb. 18 we will hike the Sage Trail/Daley Ranch. Led by Club leader and President Rich Halkyard, we meet at the overflow parking lot at 8:30 am the morning of the hike. We are provided with driving directions and suggestions for lunch. Some of the members drive, several ride-share. Transportation is never a problem. Leading up to the hike, Rich sends e-mails that advertise the hike, with the emails additionally being reminders to Club members to mark their calendars. Periodically, the hikers and walkers take part in a "getaway" hike, overnight stays elsewhere. On the calendar for this year is a trip to Asilomar Beach for three nights, staying at the Asilomar Hotel and Conference Center on the Monterey Peninsula. This GETAWAY will be featured in the Walkers/Hikers article in the next OHCC Living, appearing in tubes late in February.
