Heat Wave Safety In recent years, excessive heat has caused more deaths than all other weather events, including floods. To prepare for a heat wave, monitor local forecasts and be aware of upcoming temperature changes. Have a family plan for power outages and make sure your emergency preparedness kit is ready to go. Identify people in your neighborhood who may need help during a heat wave, such as the elderly, young, and sick. Ensure that your animals' needs for water and shade are met. Never leave children or pets alone in an enclosed vehicle. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol. Wear loose fitting, lightweight, light colored clothing. Avoid dark colored clothes because they absorb the sun's rays. Slow down, stay indoors, and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day. Check your animals frequently to ensure they are not suffering from the heat. Take frequent breaks if you must work outside. Signs of heat exhaustion include cool, moist, pale, or flushed skin; heavy sweating; headache; nausea; dizziness; weakness; and exhaustion. If someone has heat exhaustion, move them to a cooler place. Remove or loosen tight clothing and apply wet cloths to skin. Fan the person. If the person is conscious, give a small amount of water. If the person refuses water, vomits, or begins to lose consciousness, call 911. Heat Stroke (also known as sunstroke) is a life–threatening condition in which a person's temperature control system stops working and the body is unable to cool itself. Signs of a heat stroke include hot, red skin which may be dry or moist; changes in consciousness; vomiting; and high body temperature. If you think someone is having a heat stroke, call 911. Then move the person to a cooler place. Quickly cool the person's body by giving care as you would for heat exhaustion. If needed, continue rapid cooling by applying ice or cold packs wrapped in a cloth to the wrists, ankles, groin, neck, and armpits. Success made simple. Advertise with the best. Promote your business in Our Yucaipa, Sun Lakes Lifestyles, Four Seasons Breeze or Beaumont Now! 909-797-3647 You are our story… By Courtney Taylor In addition to information about current and upcoming events, profiles on unique local personalites, and business news, Our Yucaipa is looking for stories about your experiences in and memories of this sweet little town. Being a resident of Chapman Heights, longtime residents frequently remind me that my home is on the spot where a beautiful orange grove once stood. Sometimes they say it in such a way that implies I donned a Nixon mask, crept out with a hatchet and chopped down the trees under cover of darkness while laughing manaically. I didn't. Honest. In fact, I enjoy oranges as much as the next fellow. I think it would be wonderful to see and share pictures of the orange grove. I've also heard bits and pieces of a story about a waterdropping plane that crashed in the rolling hills near Crafton. That's such a tragic but important story to be told. Did you know there was once a "Swingathon" in Yucaipa where kids swang (swung?) for days at a time? Sounds a little like an episode of "The Brady Bunch." (Remember the one with Bobby and Cindy on the teeter-totter?) And people talk about a big chicken statue near Yucaipa High School. What?!? I need more! Pictures, stories, clippings! Whatever you have to share about this great place we call home, I want to help you share it. Send your contact information to YucaipaNews@ yahoo.com or call me at my office at 909-797-3647 and let's talk.
