Has this happened to you? Some students wrote something like, "My father met my mother. Bingo, here I am!" Others went into lengthy philosophical discussions of existence, which they really knew little about but threw in lots of big, unpronounceable words to make it look like they did. Then there were the ones who cut right to the meat of their story like this, "My grandparents were smart enough, frightened enough, and emotionally tough enough to leave their families in Europe, Asia or elsewhere while they were young enough to make a new life in the Golden Land of the United States of America. They worked hard in any job they could get and learned the language. What they didn't all do was give their children, grand children, and greats much information about family left behind. By the way, what does this have to do with philosophy anyway?" My paper came back with an A. So, you may ask, what does this have to do with our next meeting on Aug. 14, at 7 pm in the Main Clubhouse? On that date we will present Lois Ogilby Rosen, former lawyer and The winners of the mini-show at the June meeting were as follows: 1st: Bridgette Greb, 2nd: Dave Allred; and 3rd: Inge Repetti; Best of Show: Bridgette Greb. The first, second and third place winners are chosen by those at the meeting. The Best of Show was chosen by Sharon Rachal, the demo artist at the meeting. English teacher who has spent the last eight years researching family histories. Although she is not Jewish her husband is and she began this research to give her three children knowledge of their heritage since no one in her husband's family seemed to know much. She does all sorts of genealogy work although her specialty is Jewish Genealogy and she is on the board of the Jewish Genealogy Society of Los Angeles and was Co-Chair of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Society Conference held in L.A. in 2010. She is coming to speak to us directly from speaking at the Boston Conference on Jewish Genealogy. She has also traced her own heritage back to the Ulster Scots settlement in Northern Ireland. Additionally, Lois has given presentations on how to do family research and on how to create large family tree charts. She holds degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. This should be a very informative evening even if you are not deeply involved with finding out "Who you are and why you exist!" Everyone is invited to attend. $3 charge for nonmember guests. No charge to members. As usual, refreshments will be served. Info., Diane, 769-0130. social clubs & groups | sun lakes lifestyles | august 2013 |21
