FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK This month I am going to try to answer a question that several residents have been asking. It is the Board's intention to be as transparent as possible, and we want to be responsive to residents with questions or suggestions. The question being asked is why the Board chose to institute a Marketing Committee. They wonder what purpose could a committee of this type serve. We are one of the largest adult active communities in southern California. At 3,327 homes we dwarf most of the communities of our type. We are more financially sound than most HOAs, and have more amenities at a lower assessment rate than any community I have seen. Our community is now over 25 years old, and yet we are still described as one of southern California's "best kept secrets." People drive by us every day on their way to some other place looking for just the right place to retire. They are investigating communities to see if the amenities and activities will fit their life style and pocket books. We know where that place is. It is Sun Lakes in Banning, but unless a person knows someone who already lives hear, they never heard of us, and probably never will. Therefore, it was felt that we needed to let those prospective buyers know who, where, and what we are. We want to attract active adults to join us and keep our community vibrant and alive. Not just golfers, but tennis players, bridge players, bocce ball enthusiasts, artists, musicians, singers, dancers, pool players, gardeners, and those with countless other interests. We need to attract the next generation of invested and involved residents to insure our community continues to be run properly and maintains the quality of life we have come to enjoy. By George Moyer, SLCC HOA President Besides drawing in new prospective owners, the committee will be looking into ways of improving our internal marketing and communication. They will be assisting in advertising of events, activities, and clubs within our community. Many of the clubs and organizations have lost significant membership over the past few years. Along with trying to attract new home buyers to fill those voids the Committee will be looking for ways to help them recruit new members from people already here. They will also be working to improve and expand current avenues used to provide information to the community. In spite of Channel 97, the Lifestyles Magazine, and other normal advertising methods, we know that many residents never get the word on what is going on and how they can participate. They will be working to improve this information gap. community news | sun lakes lifestyles | august 2013 | 3
