10 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | MARCH 2022 | Hello Four Season's residents. Spring is on its way. The grass has been dormant during the winter, and should start turning green as the weather warms. We are planning on top-seeding areas that are stressed and/or damaged by gopher activity. This should help improve the common area and Legends' homes turf appearance. Dog urine that kills grass is a concern among residents as well as the Landscape Committee. A significant number of pet owners walk their dogs, which have to relieve themselves numerous times on the grass resulting in many yellow or brown spots, thanks to the dog's pee. What causes this? Acidity (PH) in dogs' urine, combined with alkalinity from high levels of nitrogen is the reason for dog urine killing grass. What can we do to stop the damage? Pour or spray water on urinated spots as soon as the dog is done with his/ her business will work, but who is willing to carry bottles of water on their walk? Getting your dog to drink more water will help neutralize the nitrogen in his/her system. This will have a huge impact, not only to the lawn, but your dog will be healthier as well. You can't just force your dog to drink, but you can make sure that she/he has water available all the time. Another approach is to give the dog treats that are designed to balance their PH and alkalinity, resulting in turning their urine into a grass safe fertilizer, There are a variety of these products available at pet stores, such as; "Grass Green" and "Grass Saver." Due to the low night time temperatures during January and February, you may have some plants experiencing frost damage. Don't be tempted to prune plants where frost damage is present. If a plant is pruned while suffering from frostbite, the condition may worsen and eventually, that plant could die. Do not automatically give up on a plant that has been frost damaged. Many plants can be surprisingly resilient and may recover. The plants have a better chance of thriving again if left alone until spring or even early summer. As soon as the weather allows, regular pruning and trimming may resume. Landscape Committee Save June 11 - Elvis will be in on the plaza! Social Committee The Social Committee will be dark for a couple of months as we all figure out what is happening with "the virus" situation. We are still planning on having our Tribute Concert on June 11 starring Elvis. Please put this date on the calendar for a wonderful evening. We really need the community's help with our Fourth of July celebration. If you are interested in volunteering for this committee please contact Mary Swinney at (714) 328-6426 or oohmerr@ yahoo.com. This is an event that everyone enjoys but without your help… Now I would like to introduce you to our newest Social Committee member, Dan Ramos. I am Dan Ramos, the newest member of the Social Committee. My wife, Jeanette, and I moved here from Oregon two and a half years ago. I retired from the State of Oregon, Department of Justice, as a senior manager responsible for the statewide IT network infrastructure and security. Returning to Southern California is coming back home because my wife and I were raised and went to school in San Diego. My first career was in San Diego as a secondary school teacher, coach, and administrator. By relocating to Southern California, we made a committed decision to be closer to family and the grandkids. I enjoy my weekly attempts at golf, take pleasure in cooking and food preparation, and have an avocation as a woodworker. Throughout my careers I espoused "community" in the schools where I taught, in the teams I coached and in work environments I have been associated. Community cannot be taken for granted. It is people working together for a common good and similar goals. What makes Four Seasons special is the community of people and the facilities. I saw it in action through all the volunteers who help in the social events at Four Seasons.
