FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MARCH 2022 41 We have screenings on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. We screen films you won't find at the big Cineplexes: documentaries, indie films, foreign films and other little gems that don't get wide release. Please note: we will have only one screening in March, since our second screening date falls on the same night as the Academy Awards. Our sole screening for the month, on Sunday, March 13 at 6 pm, is the film Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool (USA 2019, 1 hr. 55 min., English). Here is a brief description from Amazon. com: "'Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool' tells the story of the legendary trumpeter, bandleader, innovator and trendsetter who crossed musical genres and whose life was notable on and off stage. Directed by award-winning documentarian Stanley Nelson, the film features Miles' music from live performances, studio recordings and outtakes, as well as interviews with those who knew Miles best (Quincy Jones, Santana, Wayne Shorter, etc.)." This film was rescheduled from February. All of our screenings are followed by lively discussion about the film; we'd love to have you join us. The Lodge Theater has very limited seating, so if you're interested in our screenings, come early; we hope to see you there. Please note that all films announced are subject to availability. Canadian Richard Hannay (Robert Donat) is at a London music hall watching a demonstration of the fabulous powers of recall of "Mr. Memory" (Wylie Watson) when gun shots ring out. In the ensuing panic, a frightened Annabella Smith (Lucie Mannheim) holds on to Hannay and talks him into taking her back to his flat. After the bus ride there, she admits that she is a counterspy and that she fired the shots to cause confusion because she is being chased by assassins who are standing outside on the street. She claims to know of a plot to steal vital British military secrets, masterminded by a man with the top joint missing from his little finger. To stop the plot, she needs to go to Scotland to a large house in a small village. She mentions "39 steps," but does not explain their meaning. Before filming the scene where Hannay (Robert Donat) and Pamela (Madeleine Carroll) run through the countryside, Hitchcock handcuffed them together and pretended for several hours to have lost the key in order to put them in the right frame of mind for such a situation. For sheer entertainment, it would be hard to top The 39 Steps. While Hitchcock made other movies with more psychological depth and more fascinating characters, there is as much fast-paced suspense here as you will find in any of his later films, along with a good dose of humor and a wide variety of creative settings. The director's trademark (MacGuffin - an object, device, or event that is necessary to the plot and the motivation of the characters, but insignificant, unimportant, or irrelevant in itself ): The MacGuffin in this movie is retold by Mr. Memory. ~ Paul Plamondon, 4seasonsmoviegroup@gmail.com Classical Music Club We are classical music lovers with an interest in sharing our love, knowledge, and interest in classical music.
