14 | OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2022 | Several years ago, as our tap/jazz teacher Yvonne Jensen sat in a movie theatre watching The Greatest Showman, she fell in love with the music and started imagining the OHCC Dance Troupe dancing to the music from that movie. That was the beginning of her vision for our upcoming show, "Dancing Under the Big Top." The show was originally planned for June 2020 but, like many other events, had to be postponed due to COVID. But now we are back and ready to entertain you. Our costumes are ready, the choreography is set, and we are practicing overtime to perfect our numbers. During our circus-themed show, you will see lions and tigers and their trainers, strong (and sexy) circus men, tightrope walkers, snake charmers, clowns and other circus folk who will dazzle you with their acts. All of our dancing types will be on display, including tap, jazz, Hawaiian, belly, theatre, and ballroom. The show will entertain circus lovers of all ages, so bring your kids and grandkids for a night of fun and dancing. Dancing Under the Big Top will have two performances, on April 1 and 2 at 7 pm. Tickets will go on sale in the beginning of March. Our shows usually sell out, so be sure to get your tickets early. The Dance Troupe welcomes new members whether you are new to dance or have experience. We have classes in jazz, tap, Hawaiian, and belly dancing. If you are interested in tap or jazz, please contact us at ohccdancetroupe@gmail.com. If you are interested in Hawaiian dancing, please contact Valerie Thompson at valgene2@cox.net. If you are interested in belly dancing, please contact Sharon Lair at (760) 822-2670. And to join our new ballet class, please contact Diane Hillman at drdianehillman@icloud.com. Ocean Hills Dance Troupe Line Dancers Are you feeling stressed out lately? Studies show that dance helps reduce stress, increasing the levels of the feel-good hormone serotonin. Dancing also helps develop new neural connections, especially in regions involved in executive function, long term memory, and spatial recognition. I don't know about you, but I could use some of that as well! Although some of our songs are country western – most are not. Along with western music, we dance to artists such as Michael Bublé, Rod Stewart, Jim Croce, Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello with songs like Blame it on the Bossa Nova, Caught in the Moonlight, Cake by the Ocean, etc. Line dance classes are once a week: Beginner (1): Tuesday, 10:30 – 11:30 am Improver (2): Monday, 12:30 – 2:00 pm Intermediate (3): Thursday, 2:30 – 4 pm Want to try it out? Come on by. Beginner's class is $5 (60 minutes). Other levels are $7 (90 minutes). You do not have to be a club member for the first couple of 'try it' classes. After that you will also need to join the club. Dues are $10/year. If you are interested in participating in our activities and are not sure who to reach out to for further information, please call Sunny Griffin (970) 708-0443.
