| OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2022 | 15 Village Squares "The Best Laid Plans…" Once again, our best laid plans have been derailed. As reported in the last issue, we had planned to host an open house and first lesson in the new Social Square Dance on Feb. 16. However, the Master Board decided it was time to refinish the floor and to fix the stage floor starting Feb. 7, which would require about two weeks to complete. Village Squares, never to be outdone or discouraged, has come up with a Plan B. We will still have the open house/first lesson, free to all returning dancers and to all newcomers who would like to see for themselves the fun we have in modern American square dance. This will take place on Wed., March 2 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. There is no dress requirement and no cost. Refreshments will be provided. We do require proof of vaccination and booster when eligible if you have not previously done so at an earlier gathering or online. We hope to see you there to share with you our enthusiasm for this fun, friendly way to spend an evening and to welcome back all our returning dancers. Ballroom Dance Our first dance of the year will be on Fri., March 11 in Abravanel Hall from 7 to 10 pm. We will dance to the music of the Alias Band, one of our most popular dance bands. The cost will be $15 for members and $20 for non-members. We will be setting up for tables of eight. Give your check to the front desk by Fri., March 4 and, if desired, indicate your preference for your tablemates. Our monthly dances are on the second Friday of the month from 7 to 10 pm. (The times will vary for dinner dances.) The dance music is typically provided by a live band. The Ballroom Dance Club offers lessons each week on Wednesdays. Beginner lessons are at 2 pm and Intermediate lessons are at 3 pm. Cost is $7 for members and $10 for non-members. Pay at the door (no reservations required, just come). Carrie Kloss, a champion dancer, and professional instructor will provide the dance instruction. The dance she will be teaching will be Cha-Cha for both Beginners and Intermediates. Cha-Cha is a fun dance that originated in Cuba and evolved from a slow version of Cuban Mambo. It became very popular in the United States in the mid-1950s. It has been described as an "exuberant dance that will get your heart pumping and put a smile on your face." Cha-Cha has become one of the most popular Latin dances in the world. The Ballroom Dance Club has Practice Parties on Mondays, weekly in Abravanel Hall from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. Experienced OHCC dancers will review Wednesday's lessons and provide help upon request. You can practice your dancing to a variety of ballroom music. The party is FREE, just drop in. These parties are open to all residents of OHCC and guests of members. Our club had its first membership meeting Jan. 28. We served pizza and, although it was a small group, it was fun. We always enjoy getting to know each other better. We heard that all present preferred the new system of how we sell tickets by lottery rather than lining up first thing in the morning. Getting back to partying safely in these days of COVID was discussed. The rules of our County about large gatherings are what we are abiding by. We introduced the new Board of Directors which looks just like the old Board… or rather, the former Board: Marv Harwood, President; Linda Ball, Vice President; Jim Kaminsky, Treasurer; Sue Silva party planner; and Lynn Murphy, Secretary. We currently have over 350 members and have eight more parties planned for this year. Our members like to get dressed up according to the theme: This year's remaining themes include Saint Patrick's Day, Cinco de Mayo, Circus meets OHCC, Back to School Days, Havana Nights, Men at the BBQ, Halloween, and others. We could not do what we do without the help of our members who host parties and our membership meetings. Here's our hard- working Membership Chair, Linda Ball and her husband, Mike from last Halloween (photo at right). If you are not already a member and would like to learn how to get tickets to these parties, print out the membership form under Social Clubs/Doo Wop Club website on Ocean Hills Country Club. com, complete the information, and drop it by the Clubhouse front desk. Include a check for $10 per person for annual dues. Make your check payable to OH Doo Wop Club. We will send you invitations to all future parties. Hope to see you on the dance floor.
