Theatre Arts 12 | OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2022 | OHSPA THANK YOU to all our Star Donors and all who purchased tickets for our February concert. We all were so anxious for some performances and they gave us a good one! Our next concert features the Dukes Of Dixieland from New Orleans. They have celebrated their 45th anniversary and are coming to Ocean Hills direct from New Orleans. The Dukes of Dixieland have performed all over New Orleans from atop the Monteleone Hotel in the French Quarter to their Bourbon Street home at Lulu White's Mahogany Hall. Their current home is the Steamboat Natchez, where they still play nightly. (However, they did not play during COVID and are just beginning to play once again on the Steamboat.) The band has produced 31 albums, (420 songs), performed on seven PBS television shows, twice on Monday Night Football and streams daily online! The Dukes today blow traditional Jazz and Dixieland into the 22nd century, weaving strands of pop, gospel, and country with authentic New Orleans. The DUKES have worn their New Orleans jazz heritage proudly as globe-trotting jazz ambassadors from the heart of the "Big Easy." They are the oldest continuing Dixieland jazz band and have sold out such venues as The Hollywood Bowl, the Kennedy Center and the Smithsonian to name a few AND now they can add Ocean Hills to their venue! Hopefully all will go well with our crazy world, and they will be able to travel. The concert date is Sat., May 7 and tickets go on sale Tues., March 29 at 7:30 am in Abravanel Hall. We will have 90 minutes of rockabilly, country, gospel and pure 1950s rock and roll music performed live and backed by an authentic and energetic rockabilly backup band! One Night in Memphis, pays tribute to Presley, Perkins, Lewis, and Cash, recreating a night in rock and roll history that still lives on today. In 1956, Carl Perkins booked a recording session with Sun Records studio in Memphis, TN. As it turned out and quite by accident, Jerry Lee Lewis was also scheduled but Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash "dropped" in as well. As you can imagine, history was created very soon after that day! This creation that we will be watching and listening to was created by John Mueller in 2012 and features American recording musical icons in their prime and having the time of their life. They will be singing country, gospel and rock and roll songs! This is another top-flight show from OHSPA subsidized for only $30 a ticket. (Numbers will be handed out beginning around 4:30 am on March 31st… yes, you read it correctly. That is when the first people come to be sure they are there early to purchase the seats of their choice!) For all of our new residents… on the first morning (at 7:30 am) of selling tickets (March 31st), only two tickets per household may be purchased. This does not mean that a husband and wife can each buy two tickets but when the initial sale is completed, you may buy as many tickets as you wish (for your neighbors, relatives and friends) and this usually occurs around 9:30 am when we move the sales to the galleria. If you choose to sit with friends, please come and sit together when you come to buy tickets at the early hours. If you want to sleep in on the morning of the concert, ask about the Star Donor program. It allows you to do just that and you may purchase tickets for one concert or for all the remaining concerts. We thank our Star Donors, patrons and all of you who buy tickets. We are so grateful that we can be in AB Hall watching this first- class entertainment at such a low cost AND we do not have to drive anywhere or stay up to the wee hours of the morning. It cannot get much better than this, but we all know that it does! The tickets are only $30 because they are subsidized by your donations to OHSPA. See you at curtain time on May 4. We're sorry to tell you that COVID has caused the cancellation of our spring show. Hopefully, we'll celebrate with our fall show in October. Stay tuned… We are seeking a member to assume the very key, appointed position of Programs Coordinator, who will be tasked with finding appropriate programs to perform at our monthly meetings. Any interested party should please contact Jean Hefler (JeanHefler@ hotmail.com). We are in the final stages of arranging for the much-anticipated performance by the Mira Costa Dance company in April, barring COVID rearing its ugly head. Sally Benton's Actors' Workshop and Readers' Theatre had to cancel the May performance because of COVID concerns. The class is centering on being safe from COVID and focusing on monologues. New students: Come learn and enjoy! Contact Sally (moki2@ cox.net) for information on how to apply. Classes are Wednesdays from 1:30 to 3:30 pm, in the Majorca Room.
