| OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2022 | 13 Save The Monarch Butterfly Save the Monarchs Club Takes Wing The first weeks of 2022 have been an exciting time for OHCC's newest club, the Save the Monarch Butterfly Club. To begin with, there was Do Dues Day, the first for our group. Residents showed their enthusiasm by joining SMB in very encouraging numbers – by the end of January, we had more than 200 members, with more joining every week. That kind of support, and the generous donations that came with it, got our venture off to a very promising start. We hope that many others will join as they see the club's work bearing fruit. Our website has been designed and produced by Dorothy Miller and Mike Thornton and is now available to members. Even more exciting was what 11 club volunteers accomplished on Sat., Feb. 6. We planted our first milkweed garden on the site of the future Butterfly Sanctuary. As plans for the sanctuary develop, the Western Monarch's schedule demanded immediate action. They begin their quest for food and a place to lay their eggs in early spring, and it was urgent, if we wanted them to settle at OHCC this year, to get milkweed in the ground as early in the year as possible. Our group planted 80 one-gallon containers of organic native milkweed on the location that the sanctuary will eventually stand. O'Connell had previously provided soil for the garden. By the time you read this, we expect that the plants will have become well established. And if all goes well, that means our first Monarchs should be ready to begin their enchanting cycle in four to six weeks. We're grateful for HOA staff and to O'Connell for being so supportive of our project and to all the residents who have welcomed our club so enthusiastically. We have lots of room for more, and dues are only $12. We can't wait to see the Sanctuary take shape, and to welcome our first guests. Choral Society The Chorale has begun rehearsing for the upcoming spring concert and we are excited for all the new members who have joined our ranks. The theme is "Time After Time" and we'll be performing in Abravanel Hall on May 15 at 6 pm. The concert is free of charge. We have some fun surprises in store for this next concert. Also, big thank you to our generous donors! We will be offering preferred seating to these foundational supporters at this next concert. We welcome new members through the end of February. Singing is good for your heart, mind and soul. See you in May!
