| OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2022 | 37 Swim, Surf & Wellness Member spotlight - Meet Uri Redlich, co-vice president of the Swim club. Uri was born in a kibbutz in Israel. When he was 16, he joined the Israeli national swim team and represented Israel in several international competitions. In 1965, at the Maccabi games, Uri swam against Mark Spitz… and came in second! He moved to New York at age 23 and studied photography as well as earning a degree in business administration. He started his own company specializing in custom made art lighting, which was sold all over the world to rich and famous art collectors. One client was the Buckingham Palace! At age 70, Uri and his wife Raya, a retired occupational therapist, left the snow and cold behind. Their daughter had moved to San Diego a few years earlier, so they followed her. The Redlich's were happy to find OHCC and have lived here about four years. Uri and Raya have one daughter and one son, as well as three grandchildren. Uri swims laps three times a week. With photography as a hobby now, he also enjoys taking short nature trips around the county. Paddle boarding is another interest and most Fridays, you'll find Uri on his board with a group of friends. Waveriders: Interested in surfing, body boarding, or paddle boarding? Club member Tim Patel sends email alerts about impromptu wave riding opportunities. For more information, contact Tim at timpentel@yahoo.com Our club offers FREE swim lessons! Instruction is tailored to the individual and can range from teaching folks who are water-phobic to those with advanced skills. Prefer a female instructor? We have those. Feel more comfortable with a male teacher? We have those, too. Instructors are club members who offer this great service for FREE. Contact Ken Krueger at k2krueger@yahoo.com for more information. We continue to sponsor our blood pressure clinic once a month. Come to the Palm Court on the last Friday of every month from 2 to 3 pm. The clinic is confidential and open to all residents. Can't get to the Clubhouse? We'll come to you! Contact Lynne Conde at lynneconde@gmail.com for more information. Interested in joining our club? Contact Sara Stewart at s.stewart1@att.net for more information. Or just drop off a check at the Clubhouse, made out to the SSW Club for $10. Our March meeting will be open to all interested residents. Come and meet some SSW members and find out what we're all about. We'll gather on Thursday, March 17th from 6:30-8:00 pm in Abravenel Hall. Our featured speaker will be club president Robin Bleeker, who will speak about preventing falls in the OHCC age group. Robin is a retired physical therapist and has a master's degree in Motor Learning, which is the study of movement skills. Robin will offer advice about staying safe in our homes and outside, as well as teaching some exercises to decrease the likelihood of falling. Watch for a flyer in your tube with all the details! Under the direction of Rich Halkyard and several enthusiastic assistants, members of the Walkers/Hikers Club here at OHCC trek on. Late January found us locally at Mount Calavera, early February at La Costa Ranch/Ridgeline Trail. Our mid-February hike was to Daley Ranch. Upcoming in March are two of this writer's favorite places to hike in early spring: Lake Hodges and Torrey Pines. As plans were being made for these two hikes, the exact trails had yet to be announced. Being outdoors in the fresh air is one of the best reasons to hike. The status of COVID has been a concern, discussed, and decisions have been made to aid the safe keeping of each hiker/walker. A highlight of each hike is gathering somewhere for lunch. Through this time period, such gatherings have been left optional with many just heading home after the hike. Our highlight will return at some future time. An April Event—A Spring Getaway… 30 of our Club members will head to the Monterey Peninsula and Pinnacles National Park, April 25 to 28. We will stay at the Pacific Gardens Inn/Pacific Grove CA. Hikes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays will include both easy coastal hikes and moderate inland hikes, including caves and some boulder-scrambling. This hiking event is designed and developed by club members and experienced hikers Natalie Sentz and Don Dudley. Led by Club leader and President Rich Halkyard, we meet at the overflow parking lot at 8:30 am the morning of the hike. We are provided with driving directions. Leading up to the hike, Rich sends emails that give particulars of the hike… and advises to mark your calendars. Information on anything Walkers/Hikers can be found on our website: https://jkamins37.wixsite.com/walkers-hikers. Rich Halkyard can be reached at (203) 889-8506 or at redcisc@ gmail.com.
