SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS
By Kathy Sullivan
Hurray, it's almost spring. Time to plant, time to enjoy longer hours of daylight, and time to
enjoy the spectacle of the desert changing its clothes. I am always amazed how the normally
bland but 'stickery' desert can come alive every March. Whether or not there is a super
bloom, there are always flowers, and sometimes they are playing hide and seek with a cactus
or are so tiny you must get down close to enjoy their lively colors.
I can't image a March without a trip to the desert. The photos in my article are from Anza
Borrego State Park, Joshua Tree National Park and from alongside little roads in between.
I started learning photography at Palomar College in the 80s. Back then, many hours were
spent in a smelly lab watching my photos slowly emerge from the developer fluids. Of course,
then it was all black and white, and I have never gotten over my love of black and white
photography. The desert offers great opportunities for B&W photography.
I just checked Google Maps and it is a 1 hour and 45 minute drive from The Colony to
Borrego Springs. There are quite a few good restaurants in Borrego, or maybe a picnic would
be fun.
