COMMITTEE NEWS | THE COLONY NEWS | MARCH 2022 | 21 The Colony Early Building History, 1989 – 1991 In early 1988, there was no development on the land that became The Colony. By late 1988, an entry from Jackson Avenue was created and a trailer placed there by the builders. Around that time, the ground was broken for the first set of homes built by Crowell-David and Brock (a division of the Ryland Group). Crowell-David was the first builder in The Colony, starting construction on Via Amapola and Via Francisco in February 1989 and later on Corte Lorca. Brock was the second builder, beginning the same time with Via Malagas and seven model homes from the juncture of Avenida Florita and Corte Cordoba. Both companies were building during the first few years, and then apparently Brock-Ryland bought out Crowell-David. By November 1989, there was progress in building homes: • Crowell-David built all of Via Amapola, half of Via Francisco, but no street was yet there for Corte Lorca. • Brock built all of Via Malagas and half of Corte Cordoba. By 1991, more homes had been built: • Crowell-David completed all homes on Via Amapola, Via Francisco and Corte Lorca. • Brock built all of Via Primavera, Via Estrada and Corte Lucia; most of Corte Cordoba, Corte Inspirada, Via Malagas and Via Siena; and a few homes on Via Helena and Corte Emerado. Later, Brock-Ryland built homes in the Via Tonada-Via Peralta area and the last houses they built were off Colony Drive up to Nutmeg Gate. Other builders finished the division, which will be described in subsequent articles. The Outreach to History Committee is pleased to bring you the history of The Colony and surrounding areas. If you know of stories and information that we could include in this column, please contact Rita Nastri at 698-8640. Also, we invite you to join us if you enjoy history and/or writing.
