34 | THE COLONY NEWS | MARCH 2022 | CLUB NEWS April will be a very exciting month for people engaged in family research, as this is the month that the 1950 Federal Census will be released! Per Federal Law, the census is released 72 years after each census. We have arranged for one of the best professional genealogists, Gena Philibert Ortega, to give a presentation on what to look for and how to access this resource. Gena will speak to us virtually (by computer) for our Tuesday, March 8, meeting which starts at 1 pm. Members will be sent information by email before the meeting, but if you have any questions or do not receive an email, please call me. Any non-member interested in the presentation should also call me. Gena is a nationally-known speaker, author, instructor and local professional genealogist, and has spoken to our club many times. She has two Master's degrees, one in Psychology and Women's Studies and the other in Religion. She is the author of over 100 articles, several books, and maintains a blog called Gena's Genealogy and Food, Family, and Ephemera. She also has served on the Board of the Southern California Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists. Genealogy By Kathleen Brown, 698-5244 Petal Pushers Garden Club By Brenda Sindorf, 698-7097 Due to COVID-19, our 2021 home garden tour was canceled, but we're back in 2022! We are delighted to announce The Colony Garden Tour on Saturday, May 14, from 11 am to 3 pm. This will be a resident and guest event, not open to the public. If you would like to invite us behind your entry gate to view your outdoor retreat, please contact Brenda Sindorf at dancerone@verizon.net or Gloria Brosky at gabrosky@att.net. Is there something special you would like to "show off " in your yard? Plants and flowers are always a cause for oohs and aahs, but you may have other items of interest. Some homeowners may enjoy visiting the yards of others to get new ideas for their yards and/or to see options and styles of patio covers or placement of artificial grass or a fountain. Succulent gardens are a popular choice now. Is your yard entirely succulents or are they in a small section? What type of ground cover do you have? Bare dirt, rocks, pebbles, mulch, bark? So many choices! Which would fit best in your yard? These are just a few ideas of what you might share. We would love to have your home on the tour, but if that is not your cup of tea, perhaps you may wish to be a docent. We can also use help organizing the event and would welcome your contributions. The weather in May should be delightfully sunny and warm. There will be more updates in the April and May issues of The Colony News. The Wine Club is having a St. Patty's Day party! So, don your green and join us on Wednesday, March 16, in the Auditorium. Doors open at 5 pm and dinner is at 5:30 pm. Dinner will consist of bangers and mash, with Bailey's cheesecake and Irish coffee for dessert. Tickets go on sale on Mondays, Feb. 28 and March 7 from 10 am to noon in the Atrium. The price for members is $20 and the member guest price is $25. If you are not a Wine Club member and would like information on joining, please give me a call!
