42 | THE COLONY NEWS | MARCH 2022 | CLUB NEWS All Racquet Sports – Paddle Tennis, Pickleball and Tennis – are alive and well at The Colony. On Friday, February 4, while the rest of the country was digging out from a major storm, 16 elite Paddle Tennis players smeared on sunscreen and played in the monthly tournament. The players on all courts were evenly matched and the scores were very close. Mary Crocket won the ladies' division. Chuck Gordon and Wendell Jackson tied to win the men's division. Chuck and Cece Gordon provided breakfast for all participants and spectators. Their "spread" was given a thumbs- up by all. Pickleball, under the leadership and tutelage of Kathy Lewis, continues to grow in popularity. Morning, midday and evening always finds Picklers on the courts. The most exciting developments are in tennis. Jeanne Bender's USTA Ladies 3.0 League team continues to play through their 10-match schedule. They have joined the thousands of tennis players across the country that compete in league play. Large crowds of Colonists have cheered our team on at their home matches. The team is having a lot of fun, which is the goal of USTA League play. Colony Tennis Coach, John Knitter, has started a doubles ladder at the tennis courts. Choose a partner, men's, women's or mixed, and sign up. Details are available in the display box at the tennis courts. The Ladies Racquet Luncheon was on Wednesday, Feb. 9, hosted by Maggie Vazquez and Jeanne Bender. On Feb. 12, Maggie Vazquez and Jeanne Bender hosted the monthly Racquet Club Dinner. Racquet Club By Tom McClure, 303-7838 USTA 3.0 Team: Coach John Knitter, Tammy Holmes, Kris Smith, Karen Alonzo, Jeanne Bender, Sandy Wible, Cece Gordon Annie Noblett and Judy Alexander John Knitter, our resident tennis pro and coach, will not be doing the third Saturday tennis lessons anymore. Instead, he would like anyone who is interested in learning to play or just brushing up on your game, to contact him at 951-805-2456 to set up a time that works for you. There is no cost to you, and if you don't own a racquet, there are tennis racquets you may use in the box by the tennis courts. Balls are always supplied. A new tennis program at The Colony involves ongoing doubles competition. Find a doubles partner, man or woman, and join the ladder. Challenge a team above your ladder. If you win the match, you move up on the ladder. On the third Saturday of each month, doubles teams will get together to face off against each other in an attempt to move up the ranking on the tennis ladder. If you would like to sign up or get more information regarding the ladder challenge, please call, John Knitter at 951-805-2456. Tennis Lessons Tennis Doubles Challenge Ladder
