| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | APRIL 2022 | 9 Thank Goodness I would like to express deep gratitude and say "Thank Goodness" for all of the District Delegates, their Alternates, and neighborhood volunteers for their selfless service to our community. They are a vital part of our communications system here at Sun Lakes. I'm very grateful for their devoted dedication to us all. Go to the Main Clubhouse Lobby and drop your note in the box labeled "Thankful and Grateful" or email sunlakesnews@yahoo.com and write "Gratitude" in the subject line. I submitted a one page report last month that read — APRIL FOOLS! NO ARTICLE THIS MONTH! But it didn't work; it was rejected. So here goes for April. When we have an election each year for the Board of Directors, anyone who is a homeowner is eligible to be a candidate. When the candidates become Board members, after the election the five members hold an organizational meeting and elect the officers for the year. The Bylaws or the CC&Rs do not dictate the members must have the experience of a CEO, or COO, or a Steno or Secretary, or a CPA or Accountant. Any ordinary person can be elected to the Board of Directors as long as they are homeowners, residents, and 55 years of age. They go forward and operate a $40 million complex as they run their own household. The expertise of management comes from the management company they hire to assist them. If necessary, they go outside of the management company and hire an accounting firm to handle the books. This is not an over simplification, it is a fact. Furthermore, to handle the burden of overall management, they ask for volunteers as advisors to assist them with the vast breadth of responsibility. Notice the word "advisors." It means just that. When advisors begin to dictate to the Board and expect their every suggestion to be accepted and followed, they cease to be advisors and they are no longer needed. In the past there have been at least two or three Advisory Committees who were dissolved and a new committee appointed within a couple of months. They should be replaced with volunteers who know how to advise. All responsibility lies with elected Board of Directors. If they do or do not choose to accept suggestions from the Advisory Committees, that is their prerogative. The 35 years of history at Sun Lakes Country Club has shown that we are one of the best operated, financially solvent and most active adult community in the U.S. We have had all types of personnel with a variety of backgrounds and our community has flourished. I believe it indicates the Board appointed the best management company to assist them and were fortunate to select great advisors. There is no substitute for common sense and good judgment; our Board members need these qualities. Over the years, our homeowners have been blessed with the ability to choose Board members who have these qualities. It is our job as homeowners to cheer them on to do a great job and let them know when they commit an error. We do not need our Board members to be harangued because you think your way is better. If you think you can do a better job, run for the Board at the next election. Over the years our Board of Directors has tried to keep the homeowners informed. This is one of their most important tasks. It is even more important today due to rising costs and shoddy work. We wish our Board of Directors the best for their efforts and hope and pray they make the right choices on our behalf.
