| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | APRIL 2022 | 57 POP Tennis POP Tennis, formerly known as Paddle Tennis is a fun, fast sport that can be enjoyed by people at all fitness levels. Though played on a smaller court, with a different paddle and 20 percent deflated tennis balls, POP Tennis is otherwise scored and regulated like traditional tennis. POP Tennis is played on the courts to the left of the Main Clubhouse on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday mornings from 8:30 to 10:30 am (winter/spring hours). Additionally, there is a group that plays Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 3 pm and evenings from 6 to 8 pm. People are free to come and go as their schedules permit. All are welcome and there are always friendly folks to teach beginners the game! Paddles and balls are provided too. For more information or questions, or a desire to be on a decision-making committee, please feel free to contact Jeanne McGuire at (951) 845-8817. **All regular POP players are asked to get their $10 membership fee to Jeanne McGuire. The dues are used to plan parties, tournaments and buy balls and paddles. Hope you'll POP by! World Table Tennis Day! World Table Tennis Day is Wed., April 6. Please join us between 1 and 6 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom as we are extending our normal play time on this day to celebrate. New players are invited to give ping pong a try and we will be culminating our March 2022 Table Tennis Tournament. Spectators are welcomed to watch and cheer our players to victory. Tournament winners will be announced in next month's Lifestyles Magazine. In 2015, the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), organized World Table Tennis Day to get people interested in the competitive sport and has since celebrated the day so more people can learn about the sport. Table tennis, also known as ping-pong and originally called whiff- whaff, is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ABS plastic ball, also known as the ping-pong ball, back and forth across a table using small solid rackets. Spinning the ball alters its trajectory and limits an opponent's options, giving the hitter a great advantage. Regularly scheduled play days are Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 to 6 pm, Fridays from 4 to 5:30 pm, and Saturdays from 10 am to 12 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. On occasion, our scheduled sessions may get canceled due to other events held in the ballroom. Please check the Sun Lakes website at sunlakescc.com and click on "Community Info" then "Clubs and Group List," finally click on "Ping Pong Group" for up-to-date play schedule or check the Main Clubhouse events board across from the reception desk. There are no fees or dues as our tables and all our equipment are provided free by our Recreation Department. Laced tennis shoes are required to play- no exceptions! For more information, contact our coordinators Gary at (805) 722-7427 or text Valerie at (951) 570-3478. We are happy to answer questions and look forward to having you join us. Featured Players of the Month: Ed & Sophia Lin Ed and Sophia are newlyweds, having married last September. Sophia joined our Sun Lakes community after marrying Ed, who has lived in Sun Lakes for 12 years. Both Ed and Sophia started playing Table Tennis in their youth. Sophia recalls playing Table Tennis during her college years. Ed shares that he had a ping pong table at his home as a child playing during the elementary and middle school years. Ping Pong is not the only activity Ed and Sophia make time for here in Sun Lakes. Between the two of them they are also very active in golf, tennis, pop tennis, and playing pool.
