18 | OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2022 | The Dance Troupe has so many people to thank for the success of our performance "Dancing under the Big Top" that we cannot name them all here, but we want to give a special thank you to a few of them. First to be thanked is Helen Sloan. Besides lending her considerable singing and acting talents as our lead actor, she also wrote all the dialogue, weaving our dances into a complete circus story. She also came to many of our practices, making notes to help the stage and AV people, and giving us all tips to make our performance better. Her spirit of fun rubbed off on us, which can be seen in our dances. She was joined in the production by Lynn Asaro and Joe Itson, who added their own charm and talents. Thanks also go to our teacher, Yvonne Jensen, who choreographed most of the dances, taught us all the steps, and put the show together. Our Hawaiian teacher, Kailani Andreotti also choreographed our numbers. And then there was our stage manager, Charline Kenney and her crew, who kept us all organized. And we cannot forget all the AV and sound people, who made our show magical with the music and lighting. So, now that our performance (three years and one pandemic in the making) is over, what will we do now? Keep dancing, of course. We do not want to ever give it up, and we cannot wait to perform for you again! The Dance Troupe welcomes new members, whether you are new to dance or have experience. We have classes in jazz, tap, Hawaiian, and belly dancing. If you are interested in tap or jazz, please contact us at ohccdancetroupe@gmail.com. A 2003 study in the New England Journal of Medicine by researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine discovered that dance can decidedly improve brain health. The study investigated the effect leisure activities had on the risk of dementia in the elderly. The researchers looked at the effects of 11 different types of physical activity, including cycling, golf, swimming and tennis, but found that the only one of the activities studies – dance – lowered participants' risk of dementia. According to researchers, dancing involves both a mental effort and a social interaction and that this type of stimulation helped reduce the risk of dementia. It's a lot of fun too! Although some of our songs are country western – most are not. Along with western music, we dance to artists such as Michael Bublé, Rod Stewart, Jim Croce, Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello with songs like Blame it on the Bossa Nova, Caught in the Moonlight, Cake by the Ocean, etc. Line dance classes are once a week: Beginner (1): Tues., 10:30 – 11:30 am Improver (2): Mon., 12:30 – 2 pm Intermediate (3): Thurs., 2:30 – 4 pm (schedule may vary, call Sunny to confirm) Want to try it out?
