Art Lovers Good news! Beyond Van Gogh: An Immersive Experience has been extended until April 22 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Those who have seen it have marveled at the feeling of being engulfed in more than 300 of Vincent Van Gogh's paintings, and of the amazing technology that created this unique visual experience. Walls and floors are wrapped in light, color, and shapes that swirl, dance and refocus into flowers, cafes and landscapes. The sights of blossoms opening then floating across the sky, sparkling starry nights and water shimmering toward you create a thrilling palette of vibrant colors. It is said that Vincent did not mix paint colors but rather, painted each color in separate strokes. "Color expresses something in itself. One can't do without it; one must make use of it," he said. He studied books on color and learned that complementary colors like red and green, yellow and purple, blue and orange serve to intensify one another. He practiced applying this principle in his artwork creating some of the most beautiful artwork in the world. As you enter the Wyland Center you pass by several rows of lighted panels which give us some insight into what Van Gogh was thinking with excerpts of his letters to and from his beloved brother Theo. Of his paintings of starry skies, which Vincent claimed to have come from his dreams, he wrote, "At present, I absolutely want to paint a starry sky," and, "I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day. If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere." Van Gogh produced three nearly identical paintings of his bedroom in Arles. It was here that madness crept upon him culminating in an intense argument with fellow artist, Paul Gaugin, culminating in Vincent cutting off part of his own ear. Not commercially successful, selling only one painting during his lifetime, Van Gogh struggled with severe depression and poverty, eventually leading to his suicide at age 37. Join us in the Mykonos Room on April 19 at 1 pm when Betty Anne gives us advice on what supplies to use and how much fun and easy sketching can be.
