32 | OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2022 | Longer days are with us. More time for sewing, knitting, crocheting, and whatever else the "ETC." in our name brings to the table. On April 21 our monthly free "class" will be a workshop to help construct the toy train bags for our Camp Pendleton holiday toy drive. The process is simple, and under the capable leadership of Kathy Moskovitz, those of you who join us will walk away at the end feeling good about what you have accomplished for the children. The trains that go along with the bags you make will be made by our own Goldie Weis with a 3-D printer. They are always a hit with the kids. The class begins at 9:30 am in the Sewing Room. As always, the Kneedlers and Hookers gather on Tuesdays from 3:15 - 4:30 pm, where you can pick up a new skill, share, or visit. Also, on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8 pm, and Fridays from 12 to 3 pm, several quilters, crocheters and sewers will get together for "Sew & Chats." Both of these gatherings are loosely structured and tend to keep us in touch… there's always something to chat about! Woodchucks Woodchucks – A Brief History In the early 1990s, a few OHCC residents had the idea that a wood shop and woodworking club would be beneficial to those in the community. Apparently, there was some difficulty in having the plan and a space approved. In 1993, the Woodchuck Club was officially chartered. The original equipment, tools, and storage cabinets were donated and built by some of the 35 new members. Only a few of our OHCC residents will remember the original location of the wood shop in our Clubhouse, where the Computer Room is now located! That Clubhouse shop was crowded, dirty, and noisy with sound echoing throughout the Clubhouse. Nearly everyone, including the Woodchucks, longed to relocate to a more satisfactory space. With the construction of the Maintenance Building, and primarily through the efforts of Bob Mellman, a longtime Woodchuck President, the Woodchucks were granted one bay for wood shop use. The big move was made about 1999. Since that time, we have been very fortunate to expand into the adjacent bay, which now provides space for all our power tools, dust collection systems, along with bench space for layout and assembly of our projects. Much of the shop usage has always been by members making projects for themselves, their homes, and families. In the early days, and up through the present, there have also been members who offer their time and talents to design and build items to benefit OHCC, various clubs, and residents. Starting in 2006, Woodchucks have built holiday toys for the enlisted families at Camp Pendleton. This annual donation drive has grown to include the Sewing Club, the Garden Club, the Veterans' Club. Our OHCC community comes together to support Camp Pendleton with donated toys, gift cards, cash. It is a joyous holiday group effort! Join us and continue making history.
