April is here…. are you planning to pull any April Fool's Day pranks? Why do I ask? We fool ourselves many times throughout the year. For example, my mind still thinks I am young enough to get out the extension ladder and get up on top of our two-story house. Last year, I was told to sell that ladder for my own wellbeing. I am now only "allowed" on a six-foot step ladder under supervision! So, who was I fooling? We are all aging, but our minds are still trying to get us to do things we just know deep down are not a good idea. The SERT Club's purpose is: Promote the safety of the OHCC community by providing an opportunity whereby residents can enhance their knowledge, skill, and ability to prepare for and respond to local incidents and natural disasters that may adversely affect their standard of living. With our safety in mind, it's important we never fool ourselves. It is not "IF" a major earthquake will happen, it is "WHEN." There are lists of what is suggested you need, and these can be found on the SERT website. Do not be that person who buys car insurance after they have an auto accident, only to find out it's too late. Don't fool yourself into believing that you will be fine following a major earthquake. We all need to be prepared NOW! While conducting the SERT Home Safety Survey, available to all SERT Club members, we discovered situations where the resident: • Did NOT have a working fire extinguisher. • Did NOT have a carbon monoxide detector or it was positioned too high up on the wall for it to be effective. • Did NOT have a Vial of Life form filled out for every member of their household. These are all elements in preparing for your safety and that of your loved ones. Please take action, take your safety seriously, and don't be pulling an April's Fool on yourself believing that everything will be just fine. Club Updates: We had over 150 "New Members" join SERT in January bringing our total club membership to over 300! That is terrific, and we still have members joining every week! Thanks to all of you for your continuing support for SERT. New to the Neighbor-Helping-Neighbor Program – Family Caregivers Family members are increasingly becoming caregivers for their loved ones within OHCC. These family members are not "professional" caregivers and need the support of others to quickly learn the ins and outs of this new role. If you would like more information about this group, please send an email to Suzanne.FamilyCare@gmail.com. We are always looking for new Club members and for existing members to step up and volunteer and become more involved. SERT needs you to support our community effort of preparedness! Please stay safe and keep those youthful endeavors in check! By Tom Porter, SERT President | OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2022 | 9
