16 | OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2022 | OHSPA Our next OHSPA Concert (Dukes of Dixieland) is one "not to be missed." Back in 1974, producer John Shoup formed the Dukes of Dixieland, and opened their jazz club atop the Monteleone Hotel in the French Quarter, calling it "Dukes' Place" with the blessing of its previous owner, Louis Prima; they played four sets a night. The Dukes started accepting 30 dates a year with orchestras, festivals and Performing Arts Centers in the USA and overseas, never straying long, before returning home first to Dukes' Place until 1986; then a new home on Bourbon Street called Mahogany Hall, and in 1992, they moved home base to the Steamboat Natchez, where they have remained ever since. But still performing only 30 concerts a year with eight different themes (Mardi Gras, Blues on the Bayou, Symphonic Jazz, Voodoo Revue, Celebrating Satchmo, New Orleans Jazz Legends and Back to Bourbon Street). And in- between, they continue to work the dinner cruise for 45 weeks a year, seven nights a week. They also found time to record 31 albums, produce three PBS television shows (New Orleans Pops, Salute to Jelly Roll Morton and Celebrating Satchmo), and stream one show a week on the internet. Unlike their Dixieland name, they play New Orleans music, from Dr. John and Fats Domino to Huey Smith and Louis Prima, not to mention many of their own original tunes. With a repertoire of roughly 400 tunes, there is room for all of the above and still be the preeminent New Orleans band as well as New Orleans Ambassadors. Yes, they are leaving New Orleans and coming to Abravanel Hall on May 7! Tickets went on sale March 29, so stop by the front desk to see if there are any tickets available. This is another OHSPA Concert you will not want to miss! Tickets remain at $30 each. Choral Society Welcome back to some familiar faces, and also many new members, to the Ocean Hill's Chorale. We are excited to announce that we have a locally acclaimed and award-winning musician as our accompanist, Ms. Elan McMahon (at left). Elan has spent eight years as the music director for Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas at The Old Globe. Also, at the Globe: Dr. Seuss's The Lorax and the 2012 and 2013 Summer Shakespeare Festivals. She is Resident Musical Director at Moonlight Stage Productions, with over 50 productions to her name. She has received three San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Craig Noel Awards for Outstanding Musical Direction: in 2012, for her body of work, including Moonlight's Sweeney Todd and Fiddler on the Roof and the Globe's As You Like It; in 2015, for Moonlight's Big Fish; and in 2017, for Moonlight's In the Heights. Ms. McMahan holds a B.Mus. from Brigham Young University and an M.Mus. from St. Louis Conservatory of Music. We are excited to feature Ms. McMahan at our concert and we look forward to seeing her in other performances at Abravanel Hall this year. The concert, Time After Time, will be performed by the Chorale on Sun., May 15 at 6 pm. Theatre Arts The entire community was invited to our fantastic last-minute performance by the young performers from Center Stage Productions, who regularly perform at Escondido Center for the Arts. Thank you all for coming out and seeing a tiny bit of what your Theatre Arts Club provides this community. A big thank you goes out to our new Programs Coordinator, Lisa Malec, who swiftly and competently made arrangements for the show. Here's more from Lisa, herself [edited]: "I am so excited to be a new member of the Theatre Arts' Board! Here is a little info about me: "I moved into Ocean Hills a year ago. I was still working full- time when I moved in, so I didn't have much chance to participate in community events and projects. I finally retired in October 2021, and I started to investigate all the amazing opportunities for clubs, groups and events here. I have been a theatre person since the 8th grade, acting, directing, doing make-up, props, etc. in any production that came up. I knew the Theatre Arts Club would be perfect for me! "My position with the Club is searching for different types of talent groups and performers to entertain at our monthly meetings. The April 4 program featured the dancers from Mira Costa College. Later this year we will welcome the Malone Academy of Irish Dance to perform! "I hope to meet all of you theatre lovers as we progress through the year. If you have any suggestions for performing groups, please call me at (619) 302-4242." Sally Benton's Actors' Workshop and Readers' Theatre had to cancel the May performance because of COVID concerns. The class is centering on being safe from COVID and focusing on monologues. New students: Come learn and enjoy! Contact Sally (moki2@cox. net) for information on how to apply. Classes are Wednesdays from 1:30 to 3:30 pm, in the Majorca Room. Join Theatre Arts so you can participate in all of our entertainment and activities. Please make certain your check contains the following info on the form: Name(s), Address, Phone Number and Email Address. Our next Board Meeting is scheduled for April 20 in the Majorca Room at 11 am. Board meetings are open to all members, so please do come and join us.
