20 | OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2022 | Yiddish Club Hello everyone, many of our members, including a few guests, attended our Feb. 28 meeting to view the film Welcome to Kutsher's: The Last Catskills Resort, and to reminisce about their favorite memories in the Catskill Mountains. After the program, we all enjoyed schmoozing, and having some tasty nosh! Our next meeting will be held on April 18, from 7 to 9 pm, in Abravanel Hall. All Ocean Hills residents are welcome! Hopefully, we can gain a broader perspective about the holiday of Passover, which begins April 15. See you all then. Our Yiddish Club Board member, Carole Rochelle Brown Silverman, recalls a cherished story of her great-grandmother and namesake, as recounted below: My Name Is Chaia Raizel: I was named for my great-grandmother by my mother, Doris, and father, Meyer. My mother was a child living in a small town in Poland. She would accompany her grandmother most Friday mornings to ask the people in town to donate food, clothing and other items for the poor, so that they would have food and challah for the sabbath. I have two letters that were written about Chaia Raizel which will summarize what was said about her: "Chaia Raizel was a one- woman charitable institution; she alone carried the entire sorrows and heartbreak for the poor on her shoulders." At one point, a mother and father died, leaving twin children alone and unattended. She brought them to her humble home, and took care of them, until the town Rabbi was able to make other arrangements. He told the congregation how fortunate they were to have such a holy woman in their midst. After her death, many members of the community attended her funeral. Her casket was carried to all the local temples and prayers were recited on her behalf. She was a mother to her children and also to the community. I am so proud to have been named after her. As the weather moderates, we are planning to hit the road in all directions to visit friends, family and to explore! The next trip, May 14 - 27, allows members to experience the spectacular views from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, including an overnight hotel stay close to the rim. The scenic Grand Canyon railway will transport them from their rigs in Williams, AZ to the Canyon and back to Williams the next day, giving them ample time to witness the changing colors playing along the canyon walls as the sun slips below the horizon. Stops in Prescott and for some, the Antelope Slot Canyon and Lake Powell will be great ways to further appreciate the great Southwest. An April 26 - 29 pop up to the comfortable Golden Palms RV Park in nearby Hemet will be hosted by Fred and Sondra Peppe and Sandee Lang. The relaxing getaway will include exploration of the local history and attractions of the area and will feature a welcome dinner, potluck and farewell breakfast. A new trip to the Pismo Coast RV Resort Oct. 23 - 28 will explore the vast beaches and coastal areas of the Central Coast. A new RV Park has been built nearby, in Avila Beach. A large open hillside was tiered and graded to create the new RV sites, all overlooking the Pacific. Skip, Sandy and Daniel Harvey scouted it out with favorable reports. Nice to have another option for camping by the ocean! In January, Roger Marr, ably assisted by veteran Wagon Masters, presented a Forum for members considering stepping-up to run or assisting in organizing an RV Trip in the future. The success of the club is based on our members being willing to select an interesting destination and route and creating a trip with attractions and events that others might also enjoy. The purpose of the forum was to provide information and support and encouragement for those who might be considering leading a trip. Thanks to Roger and his team, we all learned a lot! In February, Mel Feintuch hosted an informational forum for WOWs, discussing Wagon Master trips and pop-up trips and how to join and participate in these activities. He and his team were encouraging WOWs to create a trip or activity for the Club. The Social Committee has arranged a luncheon at the Deer Park Winery on April 7. Oddly, this place is also home to a classic Auto Museum with an outstanding collection of antique convertible cars. A Cinco de Mayo Party for May 3 in the RV Lot is in the works. The St. Paddy's Day themed March meeting was a festive event. The Social Committee had decorated the Hall with all things Irish and provided yummy green frosted cupcakes. The membership robustly sang the chorus along with a famous Sea Shanty video, and our esteemed president led the meeting with his sparkling green hair streaming down from his elf hat. Next scheduled meeting is April 26 in Abravanel Hall, 6:30 pm socialization and trip info/sign-up and meeting start at 7 pm. RV Club L-R: Carole's Uncle Ben, Chaia Raizel, her grandfather, grandmother, Uncle Sam, and her mother, Dora
