| OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2022 | 43 Racquet Club Dusting off their dormant tennis skills, Helen Sloan, Jack Sounart, Ric and Barbara DuDeck, Jim Leveck, and Bill Brantman showed up at the HOA courts for the early March "Intro to Paddle Tennis" session. The two shared-use Courts - 10 and 11 - each have two nets (the pickleball net is lowered for paddle tennis play) and two additional painted lines (paddle tennis baseline and paddle tennis bucket line) to accommodate both sports at the venue. Current players Dannica Wood, Sue Petersen, and Allan Singer guided the newbies through the rules, how to use the colorful, fat paddles to good effect on the deadened tennis balls, and how to change and secure the nets. The lesson was a door-opener for another group of residents wanting to spend more "play" time. Residents curious about paddle tennis can stop by Monday drop-ins (9 to 11 am) to check it out or email the Racquet Club Help Desk at ohrchelp@ gmail.com to be contacted for the next introductory lesson. The first of three major 2022 pickleball tournaments was a rousing success in late February. There were 48 men partnered for doubles competition across three divisions. Tournament directors Felicity Swerdlow and Sue Bixler earned kudos for their organization of the event. Bragging rights were earned by Marshall Kelsay (Novice), Greg Gamble and Alex Martinez (Intermediate), and Harvey Bernstein and Pete Cannon (Advanced). Runners-up were David Stein (Novice), Steve Carpenter and Paul Rosa (Intermediate), and Mike Katz and Sid Saltzman (Advanced). The introduction of a "league" scoring system that factored in "wins for," "wins against," and point differentials added positively to the competition throughout the afternoon play. Tournament play was spread between the Clubhouse and Pavilion courts, with players and spectators on the move throughout the afternoon. Playoffs for the Advanced and Intermediate division champions had fans lining the patio and fences and rooting for their favorites vying for the championship on Court 6. What great fun! The social that followed, organized by Karen Burke and her team, drew 100+ players and guests. Members should note the following dates on their calendars: May 4 – General Meeting; June 4 – Summer Party on the Lanai; June 16 – Women's Doubles Pickleball Tournament; Oct. 2 – Racquet Club Special Event; and Nov. 9 – General Meeting & Election. Dates are subject to change and additional tournaments and small court events will be added. Questions? Interested in free beginner lessons? Email ohrchelp@ gmail.com.
