| LIFE IN SOLERA | APRIL 2022 | 25 HIGH NOTES FROM KARAOKE Last month Marty Mangan completed his three-part program on the History of the Vietnam War. Thank you, Marty! Richard Crowe has been preparing a program on his involvement in Vietnam and his 2019 (50 years) return perspective. However, this program will be postponed so the audience can decompress from war talk. Instead, Richard will speak to life in Colonial America and how the lifestyles of rural pioneers were shaped by wood, apples, and metal for shelter, tools, and food. We meet on Mon., April 4 from 4:30 to 5:30 pm. HISTORY GROUP Building Your Family Tree We all have a family history. Some are very historic, some are glamorous, and some are not exciting but are important to us nevertheless. Is it time to build your family tree and find out your family's history? If so, collect what you know about the members of your family and who your extended family is (your grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.). Also collect the information (birth, marriage, death dates) on not only your direct ancestors, but also on as many of the people in the families they married into. This information will allow you to add branches when you to start a family tree. When you are ready to start, I suggest you go to a website (www. genealogyexplained.com). It will give you information on online family tree programs, various databases, like Ancestry.com, FamilySearch.com, MyHeritage.com, and some general information on why a person in your family is a first, second, or third cousin, etc. Once you have decided on a family tree program, you can upload the information you have already gathered and put it in the tree. Now comes the interesting part, which I call the "treasure hunt." You'll want to find out more about your ancestors and discover any new ancestors to add to your tree. These are the nuggets you are looking for in your family tree treasure hunt. I also strongly recommend you get a subscription to Family Tree Magazine. It is chock full of information on finding ancestors, archives, genealogy databases and other useful information to help you in your treasure hunt to build your family tree. You can also contact the Solera Ancestry Group (see Genealogy Group in the "Special Interest" area of this publication) for help in a variety of areas during your family tree treasure hunt.
