50 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MAY 2022
Perspective from Artist of the Month, Chrstine Vergara: I had
always wanted to learn to draw and paint, but a busy life never gave
me much opportunity until we moved to Four Seasons.
A couple of months ago as we hit 2022, I realized that I've been in
Rob Kelman's art class for 10 years. It's been quite a journey. First
Rob challenged me to really learn how to see, for as he rightly and
frequently says, "If you can't see it, you can't draw it." Then after seeing
the world around me in terms of shapes, light, shadow, hues and tones,
I began to learn to draw.
After years of just working in black and white - graphite pencil on
white paper - I branched out into color work, primarily in watercolor
pencil, an extremely versatile medium which I've explored and
enjoyed for some years now. Recently I've returned to my desire to
paint, working in water-soluble oil paint, a fairly new medium which
maintains the creamy blend ability and longer drying times of oils
without the toxic solvents that discouraged me previously.
This painting is a scene from Laguna Beach and is done in the
water-soluble oils.
Classes are Mondays 10 am to 12 noon and/or Wednesdays 6 to 8
pm. There is a nominal $5 fee per person, per session. If you have
any questions, call Rob Kelman at (951) 992-9156. ~ Rob Kelman
