| OHCC LIVING | MAY 2022 | 43 FINALLY – The OHSC 2022 year has kicked off with a grand start of activities. Eight sails were scheduled during the first two-month sail cycle, with 15 more outings scheduled in the May/June cycle. By June, well more than 75 members will have sailed at least once. Sails were filled as quickly as they were posted on the club's web page. The enthusiasm has been overwhelming. With at least two and possibly three more two-month cycles yet to be organized for 2022, there will be ample opportunity for all club members to go sailing. As of this time OHSC has 178 members including 131 returning and 47 new members. The club's very successful March "Meet and Greet" was attended by 90 members who had the opportunity to meet the club's officers and listen to a guided web site walk through by our Fleet Captain with a description of how sails are planned and announced plus instruction on signing up for individual sails. Our Fleet Captain and his Mate recently sailed with five of our members in the ocean off Point Loma returning to the bay for a leisurely cruise past the Star of India and the Midway before returning to dock at Harbor Island Yacht Club and adjourning to dinner at the Ketch restaurant overlooking the San Diego Bay from Shelter Island. It is exciting to know that many more sails are being planned by the club during the summer months, including sunset sails and regattas, along with dinner dances being planned for June and October. Club members who are interested in learning to sail can arrange on their own to complete basic keelboat sailing lessons through the Harbor Island Yacht Club. Those members who have DOD identification cards can also take basic keelboat sailing lessons at the Del Mar Marina on Camp Pendleton. These courses involve classroom and on the water instruction under sail. And, if there is enough interest, our Fleet Captain may conduct a classroom introduction to sailing basics seminar like one he conducted last year. Of course, all members are encouraged to actively participate in sailing the boat. Members can take the helm and tend the sails under the guidance of our Captains and Mates, making the sail a truly participatory adventure on the sea. Fair winds and following seas to all.
