Lisa Scottoline "Few true friends have I known and two were giraffes." ~ Woodrow Wilson Nickel We welcome May with all the anticipation of summer. Flowers are blooming and summer is in the air. Our library celebrates with the announcement of a new historical novel, West with Giraffes, by Lynda Rutledge. It will be featured in June and available for members to reserve. When returning your books, remember to place them in the slot on the front counter. Having read this novel with my book club, I highly recommend it as a beautiful story that takes the reader on an action-packed journey with two giraffes. Woodrow Wilson Nickel, at 105, finds his life ebbing away. When he learns that giraffes are almost extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience that he cannot take to his grave. New York World Telegram, September 22, 1938 "After riding through The Great Hurricane that decimated the Eastern Seaboard yesterday, the S.S. Robin Goodfellow limped into New York Harbor this morning along with two giraffes left for dead. "The ship rode straight into this week's storm off the coast of Haiti. Seamen were helplessly caught on deck. Witnesses describe swells blocking out the sky, fish swimming in the air and crewmen being snatched into the void. The ship went into a half-roll for six hours until the hurricane passed. All was seemed lost save for one battered giraffe still standing in its lashed crate. But as the crew gathered to push the obvious dead carcass overboard, the downed giraffe stirred and opened its eyes (September 23, 1938, news reports)." Thus begins the historical saga, West with Giraffes. It is part adventure, part coming of age and part love story. It is set against the backdrop of the lingering Great Depression of 1938. Hitler is threatening Europe and Americans long for some type of hope. They find it in two giraffes who travel for twelve days on road trip in a custom truck from New York City to the San Diego Zoo. It is inspired by true events. The book weaves real life figures with fictional ones, including the first female zoo director, a crusty old man with a past, a female photographer with a secret and two spotty giraffes. This book explores what it means to be changed by the grace of animals, the kindness of strangers, the passing of time, and a story told before it's too late. This is a must read. Don't forget to get on the list to reserve it in June. "Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains un- awakened." ~ Anatole France.
