22 | OHCC LIVING | MAY 2022 | The OH Wine Tasting Club has 10 groups who meet monthly for a wine tasting party. A volunteer host provides the venue, and a volunteer presenter selects the wine theme. Many people hesitate to volunteer to present because they feel that they don't really know that much about wine. I found a website recently that could provide a solution for those who feel that inadequacy – Reverse Wine Snob – www. reversewinesnob.com. The website is run by Jon Thorson who also has a book of the same name available on Amazon. Jon has devised a unique rating system that takes into account wines that have been rated by the wine industry and the cost of the wine. For taste rating, he uses industry scores 94 to 100 points, he assigns this range to his top rate of 10. For his ratings of nine through two, he has small increments of the wine industry's ratings down to 77. His rating of one has the lowest ratings of 1-76. For his cost rating, he assigns the value 10 to the cost of a bottle at $6 or less. The values for the rates nine through five are assigned a $2 price range that increases for each rate. The remaining values are assigned a cost increase of one dollar with the last one being the cost of any bottle $20 and up. On the website, there is a color-coded grid of the cost to taste ratings with recommendations for the best value. Dark green is the best value, light green is a highly recommended category and blue is recommended. Yellow would be a personal decision but red would be a mistake. On the website are links to topics of interest like grape varieties, wine regions and wine terms. He has "best of " lists covering major wine varieties and regions. The site has links to the best wines and tips for shopping at Trader Joe's, Costco, Sam's and Aldi. I haven't checked it out yet, but Reverse Wine Snob has their own winery direct Insider Deals. Armed with this information, maybe more people would feel comfortable presenting for their wine group. OH Wine Tasting Club is open to all residents of Ocean Hills Country Club for $12 per person per year. Wine Tasting Club
