6 | OHCC LIVING | MAY 2022 | Golf Course Renovation Report I am writing May's report while overlooking the La Costa Resort Golf Course. It has spectacular greens, like the one in front of us, that is protected by two traps on the approach, and four more surrounding the green. There are four lakes, that we can see from here. It is just like our newly renovated golf course will be when it opens up… but on a decidedly smaller scale. How is that for setting "modest" expectations for our newly- renovated golf course? Now back down to earth, let's talk about our course. The front nine is growing nicely now that we have more 50 degree nights in March and April. Because it was grassed in December, it has been growing slowly until March. The back nine was grassed in March, so it is growing much faster in the beginning stages. The back nine will probably catch the front nine. That may lead one to speculate that, rather than opening the front nine in June, perhaps we should consider waiting until the back nine is ready and open them at the same time. The primary concern on the part of some golfers is the overwhelming volume we may have on only the front nine. That is predicated on the theory that if we would normally have 200 golfers, you would have the wear and tear of 400 golfers, because they would play the front nine twice in order to have their 18 holes. We have a lot more construction to complete before any decision could be made on the idea of waiting until the back nine is complete before opening the golf course. There could be several obstacles to prevent that from happening, so please don't be too concerned about, or invested in, that idea. Both the back nine and front nine irrigation is completed and we are irrigating the whole course with our booster pump located near the spa. Candyl is also completing the backup heads at the perimeter of the course. This is the area between the edge of the golf course and our houses on the course. This will assure that area has the necessary coverage, but does not blow back onto the houses, because these heads blow from the houses back towards the golf course. The Lake excavation drawings are now being reviewed by the City of Oceanside, in order for them to grant a permit to Candyl Golf to dig the lake. When that permit is granted Candyl Golf anticipates the lake construction will take about 55 days. We have not established any specific dates when the front nine will be opened, although we have discussed a possible June opening. In this article we have also discussed the possibility of waiting until we can open the whole course. All parties concerned will continue to work towards the optimum opening for our renovated golf course. By Don Lopez, Golf Course Renovation Committee Chairman
