60 60 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MAY 2022 | | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MAY 2022 | "The Sun Lakes Tennis Club is a social club that also plays tennis." So declared Tennis Club President, David Huetten, when he introduced our traditional Irish cuisine on March 19, as we celebrated St Patrick's Day at the North Clubhouse. Immediately following the meal, members of the Executive Committee led our group of approximately 40 in a trivia game related to St Pat's Day. The main event of the evening, however, was the dance presentation of Tir Ruaidh Irish Dance Company led by Roisin Robinson whose dance studio, founded in 2010, is located in Redlands. A rather large number of additional folk, including parents and other guests, joined us to enjoy an extended presentation of Irish dance routines. After the dance routines, a hat was passed in support of several teenage dancers who intend to travel to an international Irish dance competition in Germany this summer. It is fair to say that the entire evening was simply wonderful. We in attendance await news of the results of the international competition. In a second retrospect, the Tennis Club hosted a mixer on April 2, as we do on the first Saturday of each month. The mixer, which includes men and women in round robin play, began at 8 am with a 30-minute Skills Session led by Phil Hazelton with assistance by Daryl Barton. We are indeed fortunate to have these lessons offered on a monthly basis. We thank Phil and Daryl for the valuable work that they do for the members of our Club. In addition, we were happy to have a new mixer participant, a lady who intends to join the Tennis Club and take an active role. She offers a good example of how to get started with the Tennis Club. Come to a Saturday Mixer. Also, new players are invited to show up on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8 am for gender neutral, drop-in doubles play. Bill Hendra is the organizer of these drop-in days. Once again, here's a Tennis Tip offered by tennis pro Phil Hazelton:. To most of us, hitting a powerful tennis shot excites us. How to do it is the fun part. Power comes from the shoulders, then the arms, but mostly the shoulders. So, get turned early (when the tennis ball crosses the net). Point at the ball with your left hand as it comes to you. On impact, rotate the shoulders so your chest faces towards the net. This will give you full body movement, and should bring you back to the ready position, in balance, and ready for the next shot. The backhand is a natural shot (like throwing a frisbee). You must turn your shoulder in order to hit the backhand. If in doubt, see your local tennis pro for a helpful adjustment. And, as always, keep your eye on the ball and the fun in your game. Tennis
