26 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | MAY 2022 | I've been around fabric and attempting to learn to sew since I was about nine. I guess I was always trying to make doll clothes out of my grandmother's scraps as she sewed while babysitting me when my parents taught school. Fortunately, she felt I should also learn to sew like every girl in my mother's family. Enough about the early years. As we all know, the pandemic and the lockdown caused many fabric stores to be inaccessible so I went to my fabric stash. I turned up a lot of fabrics that looked like I bought them when I was nine! OK, what to do with all those old, unfinished projects that were haunting me. The first one I encountered was a bunch of strips sewn together to make a BargeIlo quilt pattern. The pattern I chose to use was missing a page of directions, but I ventured forward and completed the "Star Kindler" Bargello using a lot old and something new. The border is made with a Cosplay holographic material; dare I say fabric? Nineties fabrics meet a cool contemporary treatment. Bored with old, unfinished projects as usual, I turned to the Internet. Wow, there were lots of new fabric store websites such as Mulqueen Sewing in Arizona. Lots of shopping on these websites where I found a neat piece of fabric that looked like a complete wall hanging in itself. No piecing just a strategic cut, a lot of quilting around everything with invisible thread, add a spectacular border fabric, and the lion, giraffe, and zebra wall hanging was done. Shopping again produced the most popular, digitally printed fabric panel of the year. I scored one before they were out of stock everywhere, added borders from the same fabric line, and started quilting around everything with invisible thread. then to embellish it, I couched around the waterfall, rocks and trees, and the elk and eagle, using my favorite hand-dyed Painter's Threads from Germany to give it that extra sparkle. I'm back to piecing a quilt top now, but I stashed away a few more panels in case of another pandemic lockdown.
