We thought you'd enjoy a chuckle or two on some of the terms commonly used in the game of pickleball. Getting Pickled: This means your team was shut out of scoring any points. Kitchen: A slang term for the No Volley Zone. On a pickleball court, the area on both sides of the net, stretching from side to side and 7 feet deep is the No Volley Zone. Players cannot enter this zone and volley (hitting the ball before it bounces). You can only enter the 'Kitchen' if a ball has bounced in it first. Dink or Dink Shot: A soft shot that lands in your opponents' 'Kitchen'. Falafel: "Dead paddle," or a short shot due to hitting the pickleball ball with little or no power. A falafel often results in a dink. Poaching: Poaching is a shot you hit (or try to hit) that otherwise would have been played by your partner in doubles pickleball. Flabjack: A midair pickleball shot that must bounce once before it can be hit during one of the first two shots of any point (the return of serve or return of the serve return). After the third shot, no bounce is necessary and you can volley. Volley Llama: Term referring to an illegal move (fault) where pickleball players hit a volley shot in the No Volley Zone. Last, but not least, there really is a 'Pickle' behind the name 'Pickleball.' Three dads invented the game in Washington state in 1965 to give their bored kids something to do in the summertime. Joel Pritchard, one of the dads, had a dog named 'Pickles', hence the silly name. Mr. Pritchard was also a U.S. Congressman and later, Lieutenant Governor of Washington. Beginners are very welcome. Please wear proper shoes and bring water. Come join us and see why Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the nation, and perfect for active seniors. We have paddles and balls for you to use.
