| Four Seasons Hemet Herald | JUNE 2022 | 17 This year Summer Solstice begins June 21 at 5:14 am EDT. Garden enthusiasts pay particular attention to the changing of every season, based upon two criteria: The zone in which they live, (ours is 9b) and current climate changes indicative to planting, seeding, and harvesting. Only indigenous plant life should be considered, in addition to "when" is the best time plant, transfer and/or harvest mature growth. Here in Climate Zone 9b, we enjoy the long, dry, sunny summers and short, moderate winters with abundant rainfall of the Mediterranean temperate. As summer approaches, so does the heat and without adequate rainfall last winter, watering becomes tricky. During summer, watering should only be done in the very early morning hours and long after the sun has set. Take the time to research which plants and trees require deep watering less often, and which require more consistent watering for less time. (We are all guilty of overwatering!) Extra caution should be exercised when pruning and/or trimming, and quick research will reveal what is best to plant during this season for a winter harvest. With spring almost behind us, Late Bloomers enjoyed a fun-filled April with two trips. On April 21, a group of Members headed west to South Coast Plaza for the annual Flower Show, and on April 27 and 28, 10 members traveled on our first overnight excursion to Sherman's Library & Gardens and Roger's Gardens in Corona Del Mar. We had a full house (literally in one of our member's homes) for our May 9 meeting and were greeted with four new members! The photo of three members was taken in her beautiful garden. This month on June 1 we will be headed to Cherry Valley for the annual Lavender Festival. If you are not already a member of this wonderful group of Green Thumbers, and would like to join us, we will be meeting in the small SW parking lot (adjacent to The Lodge Circle) at 9 am with plans to depart at 9:15 am. Our regular meeting on Mon., June 13 will be hosted by member, Sherry Thompson @ 8197 Doral Lane. Late Bloomers meets the second Monday of every month at 1 pm, usually in the Arts & Crafts Room. Until further notice we are reviving the favorite pastime, from Club inception, of visiting each other's gardens. All Four Seasons residents are welcome to attend meetings and trips.
