34 | THE COLONY NEWS | JUNE 2022 | CLUB NEWS A few years ago, there was a movement out of Venice Beach to change the name of Paddle Tennis to "Pop Tennis." The name change was intended to reflect the intensity and the sound of a very fast and hot game. The Colony Paddle Tennis community never adopted the new name, but you would never have known that listening to the level of play during the May tournament. For two hours on May 6, a group of Paddle Tennis players forgot the dates on their birth certificates and played as if they were in their 30s. Tom McClure in the Men's division and Judy Brackin in the Ladies division were the eventual winners, but the scores were close, and the competition was at a very high level. Our thanks go to the always gracious Colleen and Bruce Ray for hosting breakfast; it was delicious as always. Ellen Micheli did her usual top-notch job of organizing the draws. On May 11, the monthly Ladies Racquet Club luncheon, hosted by Ali Holland and Judy Brackin, was held in the Clubhouse. Our apologies go to Ann McIntyre and Sharon Smith who hosted our April luncheon and were not acknowledged last month. On May 22, about 100 TCRC members met for the always popular outdoor BBQ. The dinner was hosted by Linda and Pat Kight, and the air was filled with smoke off the grill, good smells, and lots of laughter among the friends who gathered. In what is becoming a TCRC BBQ tradition, Pat Kight entertained the group with good country western music. Included in Pat's playlist was the original, emotional Judd Lynn tribute song, The Serve. Thanks to all who volunteered to assist Linda and Pat. This event takes a lot of planning and work. Well done! Racquet Club By Tom McClure, 303-7838 Tennis in The Colony is picking up. If anyone would like to brush up on their game or learn the basics of tennis, please contact our resident tennis pro and coach, John Knitter at 951-805-2456, and set up a time that would work for you. There is no charge for lessons and if you don't own a racquet, there are some you may use in the box by the tennis courts. Balls are always supplied. In the new tennis program, we have quite a few doubles teams starting to challenge each other. Each team picks a team to challenge that is no more than three rungs above your ranking. If you win the match, you move up the ladder. On the third Saturday of each month, the doubles teams will get together to face off against each other in an attempt to move up the ranking on the tennis ladder. If you would like to sign up or get more information regarding the ladder challenge, please call John Knitter at 951-805-2456. Tennis Lessons Tennis Doubles Challenge Ladder Thursday Bocce is still going on. If you have nothing else going, come down and join in the fun and socialize.
