COMMITTEE NEWS | THE COLONY NEWS | JUNE 2022 | 15 The Emergency Preparedness & Response Team is looking for new members! When a crisis occurs, Colony residents may not be able to rely on outside sources for help. That is why it is essential to maintain our Emergency Response Action Team. We are looking for residents who would be willing to jump into action during an emergency. Even though we are remarkably close to the Fire Department, we may not be able to count on firefighters or police showing up quickly in a disaster. They may be overwhelmed outside of The Colony, and we will need to rely on our own EPC team of resident volunteers. Positions that need volunteers: Field Coordinator/ Committee Member, Area Coordinator, and Block Captain. Please contact one of our Committee Members if you are interested in joining our team. For Field Coordinator: • Jackie Price-Chairman: 951-304-9055 • Mike Nunez-Incident Commander: 951-600-4490 • Bud Siler-Acting Field Coordinator: 310-367-2009 • Mike Herrick-Logistics/Supplies: 760-846-1008 For Area Coordinator or Block Captain: • Kathy Lewis-Planning/Recruitment: 951-412-0006 • Bud Siler-Acting Field Coordinator: 310-367-2009 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES Field Coordinator: • The Field Coordinator provides direction to all Area Coordinators (AC's) and Block Captains (BC's). • Hold periodic meetings with the AC's and BC's to discuss and update relevant emergency response policies and procedures. • Coordinates the signing of new volunteers for open AC and or BC positions. • The Field Coordinator will attend monthly EPC Key Board Member AD-HOC meetings on the 1st Tuesday of each month from 4 to 5 pm, and the EPC Board Committee Members meeting on the second Wednesday each month from 3 to 4 pm. • The Field Coordinator will report updates, changes to the Committee. • The Field Coordinator oversees, performs, and tracks Committee Member and AC radio test checks on the second Tuesday of each month from 6 to 6:20 pm. The Field Coordinator will report the results from the prior evening radio test to the committee during the monthly board meeting. • The position requires four to six hours of time each month. Area Coordinator (AC): • The Area Coordinator (AC) is responsible for ensuring their area is staffed with enough Block Captains (BC's) to assure all homes will be promptly checked for injury and major damage during any type of disaster. • Each AC will appoint an AC backup capable of performing all AC duties and to assist residents during an emergency. • AC's will maintain a file containing personal information on every resident in their area. The AC will distribute the information to the Block Captain(s) covering their block. • AC ensures each BC has the proper equipment, i.e., walkie- talkie, ID card, clipboard with partially filled out "Incident Report Forms," vest, flashlight, fluorescent marking tape, extra batteries. • AC should conduct periodic meetings with the BC's. • In the event of an emergency, the AC will report via radio to the Control Center for further instructions. • AC's and BC's are a type of Neighborhood Watch, which means if you notice anything unusual in your area, e.g., running water, numerous newspapers in a driveway, etc., you should notify Security. Block Captains (BC): • Block Captain's (BC) should go to each home in their assigned areas, introduce themselves and provide the resident with a New Resident Welcome Packet. BC's should encourage able-bodied residents to consider becoming a BC or a back-up. • During a major emergency, the BC will first take care of themselves and their loved ones. Once safe, BC's will begin their injury and damage assessment of the homes in their block. • The BC is the first responder, the one who has the ability, using their walkie-talkie, to report injuries, fires, gas leaks, major structural damage, etc. They report by way of walkie- talkie to their assigned Area Coordinator (AC). The AC will report the information from the BC to the control center. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS & RESPONSE By Judy King
