| THE COLONY NEWS | JUNE 2022 | 39
Carol's history with The Colony News begins in 1999. Early that year and a few months
after she and Don had moved into The Colony, Carol met with Mary Ann Atkinson,
the Managing Editor, and joined the newsletter staff. Soon, Carol had suggestions to
improve both the process and product and Mary Ann asked her to be her staff assistant.
Two years later, she became Assistant Managing Editor of Production, and in October
2002, when for health reasons Mary Ann stepped down, Carol became Managing Editor.
In 2018, when Carol was approaching her goal of 20 years, she began advertising for
a replacement. Jeanne heard of it, volunteered, and persisted with the training, and
Carol shifted to emeritus status. In the summer of 2020 came the HOA and Board's
significant decision of outsourcing publication, and immediately the new newsletter-
cum-magazine brought numerous changes. Among them was one that motivated
Carol to take on the responsibilities as our Production Editor, and she remained doing
this as long as she was able.
We know Carol enjoyed, perhaps even thrived on, the challenge of the newsletter, of
presenting its news well, and working with the many contributors. Still, the restrictions
of deadlines were always there. We believe Don might agree with this, because we
know many times it limited time available for them to enjoy the pleasures of their
apartment and friends in San Diego.
