| OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2022 | 15 Village Squares The Village Squares has welcomed and greatly appreciates our new caller, Mike Haworth. He continues to teach in a very student- friendly way, and our students are improving weekly. Mike reviews, teaches a new call, and then we just have fun dancing. The new Social Square-Dancing format allows for more actual dancing each week, and we finish the student section with plus calling for those more experienced dancers. We also appreciate the efforts of our co-presidents, Linda Drapeau and Steve Ward. They manage to keep things moving and allow us to function efficiently. Thanks to Ellen Kipple, who keeps our finances straight and collects the $5 from each participant. A big thanks goes to all our students, who show up each week ready to learn and inspire the rest of us with their enthusiasm. Village Squares remains active. We would love to welcome back any of our former dancers who have not yet rejoined. We are still a very friendly club and enjoy the friendship and social aspect of dancing. ~ Valerie Thompson, Secretary Another great party. Our Cinco de Mayo party was a huge success. Our members really got into the theme; among them Jim and Diane Kaminsky, Jack Morgan, and Diane Rorabaugh, pictured here. The party hosts transformed Abravanel Hall into a Mexican fiesta. The party hosts included: Pricilla and Royce Sheetz, Laura and Michael Urban, Pele and Steve Pyle, Fiona and Mikey Getler, Diane and Bill Ebbeling, and Julie and John Pashkowsky. Pele Pyle and Laura Urban were the friendly faces that greeted Doo Wop Club members at the door. Music was by CJ the DJ, the same DJ who produced our Zoom parties in 2020 welcomed us back in person with Stayin' Alive and we finished the night with swaying and singing to Sweet Caroline… yes, "Good times never seemed so good!" If you are not already a member, it is a great time to join. Our summer parties will be poolside with a large tent and DJ. Our portable wood dance floor will be "under the stars." If you would like to learn how to get tickets to these parties, print out the membership form on the Social Clubs/ Doo Wop Club's website on OceanHillsCountryClub.com, complete the information, and drop it by the Clubhouse front desk. Include a check for $10 per person for annual dues payable to OH Doo Wop Club. We will send you invitations to all future parties. Hope to see you on the dance floor! Doo Wop and Disco Dance Club Ballroom Dance Our annual Black and White Dinner Dance will be on Fri., June 10 in Abravanel Hall. We will dance once again to the music of the Alias Band, one of our most popular dance bands. The Board is in the process of planning the event. More details to come. Our monthly dances are on the second Friday of the month from 7 to 9:45 pm. (The times will vary for dinner dances.) The dance music is typically provided by a live band. The Ballroom Dance Club offers lessons each week on Wednesdays. Beginner lessons are at 2 pm and Intermediate lessons are at 3 pm. Cost is $7 for members and $10 for non-members. Pay at the door (no reservations required, just come). Carrie Kloss, a champion dancer, and professional instructor, will provide the dance instruction. She is a Master Examiner for DVIDA Dance Vision. In June we will start a series of lessons on Rumba for both classes. Rumba is a romantic Latin dance with Afro-Cuban folk-dance origins and is sometimes called the "Dance of Love" due to its slow rhythm and sensual movements. In the late 1920s, America's appetite for Latin music was ignited by orchestra leaders such as Xavier Cugat who introduced and popularized Rumba music and dancing. Rumba is not difficult to learn. The ease of learning is one of the primary reasons why it is quite popular. Once you learn the basic steps, the music does the rest. Rumba is a spot dance (it does not travel around the floor). It is danced with a basic pattern of a slow forward step and two quick side steps. It is best known for the dancers' subtle side to side hip movements. These movements, called Cuban Motion, are characteristic of the dance. This hip movement is in large part, a result of the bending and straightening of the leg. The Ballroom Dance Club has Practice Parties on Mondays, weekly in Abravanel Hall from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. Experienced OHCC dancers will review Wednesday's lessons and provide help upon request. You can practice your dancing to a variety of ballroom music. The party is FREE, just drop in. These parties are open to all residents of OHCC and guests of members. The annual membership in the Ballroom Dance Club is $10. With this membership you will receive regular emails describing club activities as well as discounts for dances and lessons. To join, just drop your check off at the front desk. Indicate your email address(s) on the check.
