There are a whole lot of photo editing apps
out there, ranging from free to requiring a
monthly subscription that reaches deep into
your bank account. One of the free ones is
called Snapseed. It is owned by Google, so
if you think Google is the Evil Empire you
might try something else, but it does not
require you to sign on to a Google account
to use it. The app can be found on the Apple
App Store for the iPhone and iPad, and the
Google Play store for Android devices. There
is even a desktop version floating around,
for Windows only, but it seems to require
some extra software. The most current Mac
computers can run some iOS programs, but
Snapseed is unfortunately not one of them.
The Snapseed app is completely free and
does not have any of those annoying in-app
purchases.
Snapseed can be used to edit photos on
your device. In its Tools section it has 28
different tools to do almost anything you can
think of to a photo. Unlike the Apple Photos
app, it allows you to make spot corrections
of flaws found in photos. There is a Looks
page that has a dozen or so pre-configured
adjustments that can make your photo look
good, or at least different. It has different
levels of 'save' function – the first thing is
to 'commit' a change you made, which does
not change the original photo but leaves it as
work in progress. You can make additional
changes and decide whether to commit
them or start over. You can review all of the
changes you have made and back out any of
them individually, a concept called "layers"
which is familiar to Photoshop users.
When you are completely done with your
edits, you then 'Save' them, and Snapseed
will ask you if you want to save it as a copy,
leaving the original as is, or to update the
original.
You can take photos through Snapseed
and immediately process them, and you can
get photos out of an album on your device,
and for quick reference you can edit the most
recent image you worked on.
