"Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put it in your fruit salad." ~ Author unknown Remember the song "June Is Busting Out All Over" from Carousel? Well, it certainly is this year in Sun Lakes. Our community is bustling with activities planned for June. Not the least of which is our Garden Club meeting. We usually meet the second Wednesday of the month; however, because of Charity Week, our June meeting will be on June 15 (the third Wednesday) at 10 am in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. Our May meeting was a country-western themed Spring Fashion Show and Luncheon. Dressing up in western duds was fun, the typical country styled buffet was fun, and Chico's showed off lots of fashion fun. To quote Evelyn Hawkins, in the western vernacular the 'ram-rod' of the event, "We just want to have FUN!" And so it was. Thank you, Evelyn, and the luncheon committee. Sat., June 4, the Garden Club's semi-annual Garden Tour is scheduled for 10 am to 2 pm. Maps and addresses of participating gardens are available in any one of the three Sun Lakes clubhouses. It is always a fun day 'out-n-about' and a great opportunity to meet and chat with fellow Sun Lakers. (Caveat: If there proves to be a need to cancel the event, look for it will be back next year.) You won't want to miss this month's Garden Club presentation. Our speaker will be Carol Mahre, the program director for the Lavender Fields at Highland Springs Resort & Inn. She's going to tell us about the development and history of the fields and how to use lavender to enhance foods and make hand-crafted soaps and candles. Need garden help? This month, our Garden of Eat-em guy, Pat Pennington, is planning to offer some insight into transplanting, whether plants from the nursery (Cherry Valley Nursery, of course) or those you've started yourself. He says it doesn't work well to just stick them in the ground. Wow, who knew? Pat welcomes the opportunity to answer your vegetable garden questions. You can contact him at (951) 314-9229. For help picking your fruit trees, please contact Joy Bailey at (951) 845-5540. For information about the Garden Club and/or if you are interested in joining, please contact Sherry Case at (951) 533-3584 or Linda Powers at (951) 769-3101, membership co-chairs.
